CEL from Headers with Cats?

So I tried searching but did not find the answer to my question.

I am very new to the LT 5th gen engine. I have owned several cars with 3rd and 4th gen LS engines.

I just purchased a 2017 Camaro 2SS.

Was looking into headers and I would likely get Kooks with catted connection pipes going into the stock exhaust.

On the stock tune, would the Kooks and catted pipes, would that set off a CEL?

And on the stock exhaust system, how many cats are there?

Is your car 6speed or automatic? AFM needs to be addressed if you have an automatic.

It is an automatic.

I know that there were problems with AFM on the Gen 4 engines.

Do the Gen 5 engines have problems also?

If so, is all that is need to disable the AFM, an OBD plugin module?

Still new to the forums and have not discovered everything I would like to know about the 6th Gen Camaro. Search tool is not very helpful unless you put in the exact perfect search words.

Yes, you will get a CEL. Aftermarket cats need a tune before you install them to avoid permanent codes. Been discussed on this board in several threads.

Lots of good knowledge here about your topic.

Very lucky. ‘17-up is not worth screwing around with permanent codes, much better off to make adjustments in the tune before you add hardware IMO.

You will most likely get a CEL. Also, without a tune you will not be taking full advantage of the headers in terms of efficiency and performance. Get a good dyno/street tune. You will thank me later.

Thanks for the info.

I am aware that a tune will extract all of the power potential out of mods such as headers.

Was thinking of getting headers and then running un-tuned for awhile before getting a tune.

Never heard of permanent error codes before; that is crazy.

So to do things correctly, I would need to have a tuner turn off the error codes before any mods and tuning is done?

That’s definitely the best way to do it. If you do it after the fact, you can still get your tuner to clear the CEL, but the error code will still be in your ECM. So if you go in for inspection you will get flagged. Now if you don’t have plug-in emissions testing, it’s probably not a problem. But if you shut off the anticipated codes in your tune before the install, the car will not show any of those related codes and that’s the best case scenario.

For example: if you’re getting a catback for your A8 car that does not have the AFM valves, just have your tuner shut all of the related AFM codes before you do the work. Then install your new catback. Good to go.
