DOES ANYONE HAVE AN OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEM?

Hello everyone. I was just about to schedule an appointment with my local dealership to have an oil change the other day. I went to start the car and the info screen put up a message that said "Low oil level, Add oil". I checked the dipstick and indeed it was low. I had an appointment today and I intentionally left the oil level low so it could be seen. I asked the tech, how low was it? He said "2 QUARTS" I asked him how the h--l can a 17000 mile car be consuming oil? I want to know if anyone else has experienced this? I can tell you the car has not been to the track yet and I just replaced my first set of tires about 500 miles ago (16,500 miles).

as hard as I have run my ZL1, I have not had to add one drop between changes (approx 5k miles). This includes many laps at VIR too.

They may not have filled it up with the correct amount initially. ZL1's take more oil than an SS.

I have added 2 Quarts in the past 5000 miles, each time after the Low Oil warning. I'm at about 28k now. I drive my ZL1 daily. I do tend towards "spirited driving". I often wind first gear out to 35-40mph, and cruise at 40-48 in 2nd gear. I rely heavily on engine deceleration, so I sometimes down shift to 3rd gear at 80-60 to 2nd at 65-40, and first at 45-0. Increased oil consumption, is somewhat expected in my situation, however I am monitoring it much more closely now and keep two quarts in the trunk, always.

Those of you that are using oil, what was the break-in procedure you used when the car was new?

I don't use oil in mine. I also was hitting redline and using engine braking from day one. I don't believe in extended break-in periods. A couple of heat cycles and give her hell is how I do things.

I change oil every 2000 miles and give it hell all the time. It stays full with the exception of the couple of ounces in the catch can. Oh and I didn't follow the break in at all!!

OP how many miles since your last oil change prior to the 17k mark? 1 quart every 3k miles is acceptable oil consumption. Maybe it wasn't filled all the way last time. Lots of variables here...

+1, no oil consumption here either. a small amount in the CC once in a while. Has always been full on the stick. I did watch a tech try to only put in 7 quarts and stopped him to let him know he was a little short. the owner and manager lit him up because they know how paticular I am about my car.

See how it does at 3,000 miles. If you can get 3k miles without being a quart down then I'd settle for that; Make sure that the oil gets changed at that mark.

Let the dealer do an oil analysis (it used to be termed oil economy test) to see if there's a potential problem somewhere.
