Orange Peel
I just got my car back from the body shop (BMW pulled out in front of me and has been getting repaired for 34 days). I was inspecting the paint job and noticed a decent amount of orange peel in the hood. I was thinking they may have done a poor job repainting, but when I gave a closer look to factory painted parts of the car I noticed quite a bit as well.
Now my car is the mosaic black metallic and I've seen quite a few complaints about issues with this color, but I was wondering if this is just kinda the standard now with newer cars? Has anyone tried to fix it? How much orange peel is too much? |

They have a decent amount of o.p. The worst two that I've saw for it were both red hot though. I wasn't thrilled with it for a factory paint job, but it isn't so bad it will bother most people.

I guess the fact that I didn't notice it in the first few months I had it before the accident means it's livable.

Yeah it's probably fine. I give auto paint the 5' rule just like I do on guitar finishes. If it looks OK from that far it's good enough. It's not a show car and if you drive them it's inevitable that they'll get messed up.
Spring is a tough time to look at paint too. All the chartreuse pollen covering everything exaggerates paint details.

On my black it has a slight orange peel effect, but you have to really look for it and it has to be at the right angle and right lighting. Form my car, I can easily live with it because I don't notice it unless I'm trying to notice it.

Hard to find a car these days without some orange peel. My Hyper blue is excellent, my last C7 in silver not as good...but Corvettes have had a long history of paint issues..

Took a short video to show the amount on my hood. It's pretty magnified under the florescent lights in my garage.

Oh yeah, looking at your car under those types of lights will drive you made with seeing things that you wouldn't see under most other circumstances.

That's exactly how I felt this weekend. I swear for the first 2 months I had it, I never noticed anything....now I can look at my car any time of day under any lighting and any part and see it all over.

Is it awful that I don't know what you mean by orange peel? Sorry I've never heard the phrase before!

Pretty sure my 2010 had a decent case of this then. I didn't even know something was wrong, thought that was just the way it looked

I have a metallic black. I'm just happy they put enough paint on the outward facing pieces that you dont see primer like on most of the inward facing ones.
Yes, the entire thing is orange peel. It's almost like they were intentionally going for the look. |
