Low oil message

Hey, Guys, a low oil message just popped up out of nowhere.

I checked the oil level & it is below the cross hatch section where it supposed to be. But there is oil on the stick just below the cross hatch.

I don't have any handy.

Should I leave it parked?

Can put 100 or so miles on it for a diner run & back?

Man, I never had this issue come up in in 20 some years of driving Japanese cars. Both the 2SS & CTS Coupe seem to be less than bullet proof on oil consumption.

You can run it (no track stuff) with no oil on the stick .....My low light doesn't come on until I'm almost 2 1/2 quarts down. Which it did when I was refilling with a wone time and I let it run to work it through the system.

Welcome to GMs oil consumption AFM+PVC design world. Drive it to get the oil. Keep some around. 5.3s are a problem and now 6.2s have the AFM/PVC design.

I have run nothing but GM (well one 280Z) since the 60s. And never worried about checking the oil till I got a recent GM AFM+PVC design engine. Our Acura and Honda, 4 and V-6, not a drop. But neither have the some what new Honda cylinder deactivation V-6.

I had AFM on my C7 Corvette, now 11k on the Camaro, never burned a drop of oil on either car. Just my experience.

Active Fuel Management. The LT1 has hardware to allow it to deactivate 4 cylinders under certain "light load" conditions. All Camaro LT1s have the hardware but it is deactivated on Camaros with the manual transmission.

I wouldn't. Even if he drives conservatively, all it takes is a steep incline and the oil pickup will pull in air instead of oil and may result in a scored bearing.

It holds 10 quarts. More like 10.5 really, because I have yet to have an even 10 measure at the top of the dipstick when I change it.

So unless that steep incline is more like a rock crawl, he's probably good.

Unless I'm misunderstanding you the oil should be at the top line of the crosshatched area. If it's at the bottom of that area then it's about a quart low.

As for consumption, mine got that low too but the light never came on. After the first oil change it's stayed full, even after a track day the other day. I was shocked.

I responded to his statement that you could drive it with "no oil on the stick"

The problem is that once there is no oil registering on the stick, you have no idea how low it is. The pan could be dry.

I stand by my statement. Why?because his oil light went on regarding level.that means he's 2 quarts down. With that ,you can drive it.

I agree with Glen..... oil is just below the crosshatches..... oil light just came on..... normal driving more than okay.......

2 quarts low on a 10 quart motor..... not a dire issue.....
