an immediate fine vs. a fix it ticket, meh, ok, not life altering. And wouldn't you just want to pay the fine vs. having to put the stock exhaust back on, go to court with that to get it dismissed and then have to put your other exhaust back on...that will be expensive too.
I wish I could dole out some fines to all the diesel douches who HAVE to have the loudest vehicles in a 500 mile radius or they just can't live with themselves. But honestly, there doesn't seem to be much of anything to do about anything here...If you are running a loud exhaust and are a nuisance, then pay the fine.

dupe post so, should be deleted.
But TLDR: there's no change to how loud you're allowed to be. What has changed is that you no longer get a fix-it ticket, and instead can be fined up to 1000 dollars and will be forced to get manually inspected. I guess it was too easy to "fix it" and then revert back for people. So now you will pay a thousand dollar tax to do the same thing. |

the bill is linked on that jalopnik article. But the bill only changes the enforcement aspect of the existing law. You technically still needed to do the referee thing before this law. Referee inspections aren't something you can normally slip some extra cash into in order to pass. They will find everything not CARB compliant and cite you for it.

Problem is when you get a $1000 ticket and inspection with a stock exhaust, or legal one. Then You have to waste a day getting inspected AND go to court to fight the ticket.

In my experience, most stock exhausts aren't getting anywhere near the 95dB limit. The NPP exhaust can get loud and may attract attention near the end of the throttle in track, but I really believe people are blowing this out of proportion and fear mongering the situation. Aftermarket stuff might be worth being nervous about, but not stock systems.

Yes exactly, but that doesn’t stop the cop from saying “that’s loud and therefor illegal, here’s a ticket”
Like all people, Some cops are dicks, this happened multiple times to me growing up where the law stated it cannot be noisier than stock. Since noise was subjective there was no way to beat the ticket, even if you made less decibels than stock at a different frequency. |
