Anyone NOT activate OnStar / XM?
I know a lot of people like them, but honestly, I'd rather not have either one, or have to hassle with 'em (like the OnStar advert that brings down the infotainment stuff).
Have any of you just told the dealer to not activate them?

IDK, for free? I think its great. I love being able to remote start my car 5miles away when I am on the train. Nice and toasty when I get off the next stop.

I activated because I like turn by turn to the car, but when it's over the free period, I'll cancel the whole thing, much too expensive.
I will let XM cancel, then renew after I've beat them down a bit... |

When i pull the trigger i'm gonna go with not activating and then i'm going to disable the antenna. We're just shy away from hearing about cars being driven into walls remote controlled. I dont need some stupid exploitable infotainment system getting control over my entire car, or a omni-present "service" that can jump in and take over your car. I'm going battle star galactica on mine. Nothing networked (at least to the outside).
It's not exactly a onstar related vulnerability but this is the future: https://blog.kaspersky.com/blackhat-...xplained/9493/ |

XM... Go fight em right now to extend your trail to 12 months like it should've been if you haven't. Will take you about an hour at least on the phone but worth it haha. After trial for XM is up, wait for expiration and then instead of paying 15 bucks a month, end up haggling it for 7 bucks a month lol. |

Has anyone verified if the location of the OnStar unit is in the same place as in this instructable ?

On the trucks they had a deal where if you used the smartphone app anytime during the 6 month trail then they would leave your free account active for 5 years. It allowed the remote start feature to still work.

I was forced. Lol. Dealer didn't offer any sort of a choice in the matter and as I was about to leave the dealership the salesman reached up and pushed the OnStar button and left. Lol

Hey, I feel you have a deeper motive for asking this question so I'll bite
(& play the part of the crusty old coot who lives in the hills...) Ordered a 1SS mainly for that reason--wanted a hotrod not some chiming, dinging talking PITA 2nd wife wanna-be, LOL Only thing I pushed was the RED button while adjusting the mirror for night. (Yeah Jeff-if ya sprung fer the 2SS it'd have auto-dimming!) By the time the guy said "is there an emergency" we woulda been dead anyway. I said, "can ya PLEASE shut this thang off?" All this free jimcrackery is just to hook people on services they never needed to begin with & to rake in monthly fees. Mylink lets my iPhone 5 do everything I'd ever need WITHOUT: XM Pandora OnStar (gotta look into whether they can legally not locate a stolen car if you don't retain an advanced plan--seems like extortion) The side mirrors can be adjusted (surprisingly) to eliminate all blind spots--even the one behind yer left ear! And WTF--people really need help parallel parking? So no, my friend--OnStar's probably on & ticking away but I didn't do it! |
