Rear license plate centered or not?

When I took delivery of my 2SS the rear license plate was installed slightly off-center. But it didn't bother me.

After fixing an issue, the dealer replaced the rear fascia and re-installed the license plate. This time it was a whole inch to the left, aligning more with the backup camera rather than the center of the car. Once I mentioned this to the service department they showed me another Camaro that had the license plate installed the same way, 1 inch to the left. But then I was looking around and saw another Camaro they had with license plate installed 1 inch to the right.

So I have a couple of questions to the community:
1. Is your license plate centered?

2. Is my dealer gaslighting me and they've just incorrectly install all these license plates or there is a technical reason to install it a certain way (left or right)?

3. If the dealer refuses to fix this, and I try to unscrew and screw in the license plate myself, can I damage anything?

Sounds like your dealership is filled with idiots.

They are gaslighting you all right, and don't have the patience or ability to install the rear license plate correctly.

The rear bumper has a number of dimples to aid in positioning the plate, because the bumper is made the same for all markets with different license plate sizes, and I guess the dealer just picked four of these indents that "felt right", apparently not the correct ones...

Without a picture, I have to assume it’s perfect

If you remove the license plate and look behind, there are several precast dimples for different plate formats, it is actually very difficult to screw that up

I see no dimples. It's a flat surface. But I see a few tiny indentations at random locations. See photos. It doesn't look like there are any "predefined" locations for screws.

Also attaching the positioning of the plate as it is now. The green line is the symmetry line. Yellow and purple lines are same length. The difference in real world between these two lines is about 0.5 in.

The clusters of indentations are a reference for different countries license plates. Just hold your plate up to where you think it’s centred on the car and see if any of those indentations lineup with the holes in your plate. An insert is not required to mount the plate. You can simply use a quality stainless screw if it bothers you enough that you want to relocate it. My guess is the dimple with the arrow to the right of the left side hole is most likely the correct location for the plate

As CalgaryZL1 said, those indentations you see are the dimples we were talking about, and you will find a cluster of 4 that perfectly line up with the holes in the US license plate.

On a side note, what bothers me is that the backup camera is not centered, so there is an offset on the screen, too, that I have to compensate for when parking. Since I drive other cars, too, I occasionally forget about this. Very minor first world problem, though.

I had the same problem on mine - I hadn't noticed it until about 5 months when my son pointed it out... I took it off and drilled the screws into the "correct" spot.

I did fill in the wrong holes with some exterior clear caulk I had to avoid water from getting in.

Good luck!

Its a long story for another day . The source of most of my issues with the car so far. I can make a thread describing what it is for and how I got it.
