Hennessey Exorcist (ZL1) vs HPE1000 (SS)

Just farting around on the Hennessey website, and I noticed something odd. The Exorcist (based on the ZL1) is the car that gets all the attention. “It’s the Dodge Demon killer.” “It’s got 1000hp, does 0-60 in under 3 seconds, the quarter in under 10 seconds, and has a 217-mph top speed.”

Don’t get me wrong – those are amazing numbers.

But, the HPE1000 Supercharged, which is based on an SS, is even better. Not much, but better nonetheless. Check out the figures:

Horsepower
Exorcist – 1000
HPE1000 – 1008

Torque
Exorcist – 883
HPE1000 – 918

0-60
Exorcist – <3.0 sec
HPE1000 – 2.7 sec

Quarter Mile
Exorcist – <10.0 sec
HPE1000 – 9.8 @ 143mph

Top Speed
Exorcist – 217 mph
HPE1000 – 220+ mph

On paper, in every measurable category, the HPE1000 package you can get on an SS beats the Exorcist package you can get on a ZL1. So, why does Hennessey promote the 2nd-best car in their stable, and why does the media feature it so often?

The cars are probably pretty close. I see a YouTube video of the Exorcist running the quarter at 9.57 at 147, so the data posted may be out of date.

...no replacement for displacement...

HPE1000 = 416 CID Stroker motor.

Exorcist = stock block & crank.

If those 1/4 mile times are correct, then i would as a consumer be very hesitant to taking my car to either shop. At that power level, they should be much faster. The GM Zl1 Drag test car is running 10.0 at 138 with far less hp. To be fair, the GM test car was with 110 octane though..not sure about the cars u mentioned.

How did I not notice that before?

Watched some video online, and evidently Hennessey "tunes down" these motors. Basically, they test motors, trans, etc. until they find out what breaks them, then turn it down a notch.

The cars come with a 3yr/36k mile powertrain warranty, as well.

The real question, has anyone ever contacted Hennessey to see exactly what their warranty cover? Is it just their parts or the entire motor/drivetrain? I can see having the upgrade done, then you throw a rod or something.... destroy your motor and then Hennessey covers basically nothing but their parts?

There are a number of shops that can build a car to this level. Most shops do not offer a warranty per se. Shops that do offer a warranty usually will charge more.
