Any drawbacks or issues from a CAI?

Just installed a Roto-Fab CAI on a 2018 ZL1. Posted about it on Facebook. Mechanic friend said I should remove it immediately unless I want to have issues. Anyone ever have issues with a CAI with no tune on their ZL1? I had a Cold Air Inductions box on my 2017 SS but I had a lot of work done it in addition to a tune and didn’t have issues.

RF does not need a tune. If installed properly, there should be no issues. 20,000 miles with mine and no problems.

If it’s a Rotofab Big Gulp you need a tune. If it’s a regular Rotofab there’s no issues.

I didn't have issues with a standard for the few hundred miles it was on the car. I liked the extra whine, too.

Out of curiosity, why did you take it off?

He isn't wrong, but not all CAI's are created equal and not all cars react the same way so you can't just make general statements like that. That is where good intention becomes bad advice.

What others have said is true for the ZL1. No issues, as long as it isn't the Big Gulp.

"Mechanic friends" are the worst. Just because they are mechanically inclined, doesnt mean they are car guys or actually know much about cars. Just like car salesman. Walk into any car dealer and ask their "specialist" about whatever performance car/truck/suv they have and you will basically get the read from the brochure treatment.

Unless the mechanic friend is also a camaro enthusiast, hes not going to know much more about camaros and their mods than your average shade tree mechanic driveway guy.

Depends on which CAI you go with. The RotoFab is not that expensive and is well engineered compared to some of the other brands out there.

The only downside with the "no-tune" Roto-Fab is your wallet is lighter. Gains will be minimal without a tune. The stock air box flows pretty darn well up to around 700 rwhp.

They only real issues I see could come in the way of your powertrain warranty should your engine suffer a major catastrophe and GM sees you have an aftermarket intake installed. They have been bastards when it comes to warranty and engine modifications. Former chief engineer for the Camaro line, Al Oppenheimer, once claimed that GM can tell if you've had an aftermarket intake installed. No way to know if that's true or not until you have a major engine failure that falls under warranty repair.
