My 1LE ate a Pushrod
My 2014 1LE had a bit of ticking on Sunday morning when I started it. I kept my ear on it and thought about what it could be. First stop of my errands I checked the oil. Full as usual since I'm religious about only one thing, my car. In between second stop the ticking got super rapid and then disappeared altogether and simultaneously the check engine, service stabilitrack showed up. I got it towed to the dealer and they have reported that the pushrod in cylinder 5 went for a trip. They found it via scope (I'm guessing since they hadn't pulled the heads) hanging out horizontal along a head stud. So far I'm being quoted between $1400 and $3800 unless they find more damage. I'm hoping for the best!!!

For that price I would go to a performance shop and do a cam package for the same price.

Yea. If this gets expensive you need to pause and consider your options.

What would have caused this to happen? Is this fairly common on the LS3?

$2418.01 out the door. Lifter in Cylinder 5 collapsed taking everything else with it but no other damage. I'll be picking her up tomorrow morning.

If anyone could tell me if there is a break in schedule that would be great. My service advisor went on vacation right after he gave me the $1400 - $3800 estimate. There was silence for a day and a half and all of a sudden the car was done. She is right back to normal but I would love some advice as to how this possibly happened and what I can do so it doesn't happen 7 more times. Thanks all!

I've been a dealership technician since 1984...it's bad ju ju to disparage someone else work, but I will tell you this. I can tell by looking at the parts used that you have a LS3. I work in a high volume shop, and specialize in Corvette. The only lifters we have a problem with collapsing are the AFM lifters, never the standard lifters the LS3 uses. I have replaced numerous bent push rods in the LS3 Corvettes and Camaro's and have never had to replace a lifter as a result or cause. I'm going to assume that you had a inexperienced tech (which are plentiful these days) working on your car. The reason I make that assumption is that there is a bulletin concerning the LT style V8 for 20-21 trucks that bend pushrods due to a collapsed AFM lifter.
I'm pretty confident I could have fixed you with nothing more than a pushrod, valve cover gasket and possibly a oil change! |

I’ve bent several LS pushrods over the years, and just can’t fathom how one would have ended up doing what the OP is explaining the diagnosis was. Replacement is simple just like you said - pull the coil rail, valve cover, and rocker(s). Drop new pushrod(s) in and button back up. I even reused my gasket and didn’t change the oil

That's the info I was given. What you're saying makes me wonder but at this point what can I do?

Is it possible a bent pushrod under heavy load could do something to a lifter? I had a ticking and it got super loud and then stopped and that's when the bells and whistles activated.

I would gather that the pushrod started bending and then bent enough that it snapped. That's why it started out a small tapping and gradually got louder as it bent more and more till it broke.
