There has to be a cleaner way to balance wheels

I hate the way that these stick-on weights look.

I use the old school LEAD weights that clamp on to the OUTSIDE lip of the RIM. I have them put them on the side of the rim that faces the INSIDE of the car. Discount tire suggested this when I kept getting the stick on weights hot enough that they would get thrown off or misplaced from their original location when I was road racing.

This was my other concern. I'm sure that I've lost a few since they were last balanced, but there's so much sticker residue from previous weights that I couldn't be sure without photos (thus today's "before" photos)

if you buy the touchup paint for the wheel you can just paint the weights. They will blend right in

Black duct tape works good and hides them.

Problem with TAPE

OK I used to use BLACK duct tape as well but ANOTHER area of concern is that ANYTHING that is put INSIDE of the barrel of the wheel potentially can cause interference issues with those of us that are running 18 inch wheels. There is not much clearance between the caliper and the inside barrel of the wheel. Black wheel weights are available but I got tired of spending 30-45 minutes getting the adhesive off the wheel from where the PRIOR set of weights was and I promise you people like discount tire are NOT going to take the time to do THIS labor intensive task.

The adhesive that the stick on weight use is a BITCH to get off and there is ALWAYS a chance you might damage the powdercoating of the wheel if anything is used to PRY the stick on weight off the wheel.

While it is certainly true that you can paint the clamp on weights with a color matching paint, WHY BOTHER??? You will never see the inside of the wheel anyway once the wheel is on the car normally or you better not!! lol.

Weight are available in black

Track usage - you can use foil duct tape to secure them. Adhesives are typically designed for hi-temp use environments. Never had any move w tape treatment. Easier to see, so you know if you lost some or it gets damaged. Shop balancing wheels can choose location farther from caliper contact points.

MISSING THE POINT

The OP mentioned he did not like the looks of the stick on weights on his wheels. ANY use of tape or even BLACK stick on weights DOES NOT alleviate his concern. The ELIMINATION of the stick on weights altogether DOES eliminate his concern.

Short of clip-on weights that are even uglier and potentially more destructive of finishes, or buying 100% perfectly balanced wheels with 100% perfectly balanced tires (that I have never seen), these are the available options.

You will hardly notice black stick on weights. And they don't come off if the surface is prepped correctly.

That old glue is a real B to remove especially with the wheel on the car and I never ask as I figure my tire guy is going to use a screwdriver and gouge the heck out of the wheel.

Now that I'm about to have a swap on wheel set of winter and summers it'll be easier for me to work around these things, I may buy some black stick on's ask my shop to use them, they've not had black on hand when I'm in there lately.
