Aftermarket wheels worth it?
Quick question for every one, including wheel sponsors/sellers, are after market wheels as nice and built as strong as factory wheels? Weight wise are they less or more heavy?
Thanks |

Depends on what you buy. Some yes, some no. Cheap ones, prob no. Anything less than $400-$500 per wheel is prob sketchy. Even at that price you arent guaranteed a high quality wheel. My Racestar wheels were in that range and i think they are "ok" quality. Prob equivalent to OEM, a little lighter for about the same strength. Get forged for strength and light weight. But you'll be north of $800 per wheel.

It really depends on your budget and what you are looking for. There are some cheap wheels that are probably lesser quality than the factory wheels, but you can dramatically change the look of the car for less money. Then you have the more expensive, quality wheels that are stronger and lighter than factory wheels, but you have to pay the price. If the purpose of the wheels is appearance, then almost any aftermarket wheel will be fine. But if you track your car and are looking for something to reduce weight, you will have to spend a bit more. Whether it's worth it is your own opinion.

Rich, there are tiers in both OEM and aftermarket offerings. The standard wheels your 2SS came with aren't the best (they are not fully forged), while OEM SS 1LE and ZL1/ZL1 1LE wheels are fully forged and much stronger, for example.
You will find a similar distinction in the aftermarket, and as others have stated, you can expect to pay 2-2.5x more for top shelf, lighter and stronger aftermarket wheels than for less capable (e.g. flow forged) ones. That said, the real question is whether you need the lightest/strongest possible wheels in the first place. I'd say if you don't track your car and only use it for the street and for the occasional canyon run, you'll be just fine with a great looking flow forged aftermarket set such as MRR's offerings. This, however, is a decision only you can make for yourself.

Thanks every one. I think I want a different look then the stocks and be strong enough to beat on them. I figure I will take car to track maybe 4 times this year. Last time I bought wheels was when we machined down some 22.5” Alcoa wheels to 22” for my dually lol so the sports car wheels are nothing I ever looked into before. I don’t mind spending money on good products but don’t want to over pay for stuff I will never max out. Also want the most concave looking wheel for the rear too, I know that has to do with back spacing but some designs look deeper then others.

I love how my 1LE wheels look. I do not love how they are 20s and heavy/lethargic. The 1LE should have come with 19"s, but again, they look awesome and people ask to buy them off me. So if you are looking to race or go faster, smaller wheels are better to a point, sidewall stiffness is also important and maximized by a short sidewall. Aftermarket, you can get lighter wheels or change the size for specific purposes.
