LT1 engine oil capacity- need 10.5+ qts?!?
2023 2SS 1LE… changed oil and filter twice now, first at 500 miles then today at 1600 miles. Each time it has taken a bit over 10.5quarts to get oil registering mid “okay” region on dipstick.
Drained oil with front of car on 10” high RaceRamps. Oil brought up to operating temp right before change. Let drain until very slow drip. Then refill with 9.5quarts (including refill of filter) and pull off ramps to have car sit level. Have to add additional quart+ to get oil showing in the middle of the dipstick range. Never had a vehicle ever want markedly more oil than specified capacity (in this case, 10qts) to get normal dipstick reading in all my years. Also checked cold after letting oil all drain back down, no real difference in level. Thoughts? Dipstick length off? Normal?

10 quarts always gets me to the top of the hash marks, usually a little over.

Race ramps might affect it. I need more than 10 qts and I also have the car at an angle to drain. ZL1 but not sure there is a difference in the oil pan.

Mine also required 10.7 quarts to get to top of the hash marks (10.0 was only 1/3 way up the hash marks). The car was in my garage when filling and I let it sit overnight before taking any readings, so there's no way I had a mis-reading.
I wonder if some of this has to do with how long you let it drain the old oil. I've let it sit there until it stopped dripping out of the pan. Perhaps others stop at an earlier point. |

Always changed my oil (5-6 times now) on a QuickJack (i.e very level, the very reason I bought the QuickJack) and the car has been level, let it drain for 45-60 minutes (minimum) and the change then filter and plug it back up and fill it with 9.5 quarts, lower it and almost every time end up putting the last 1/2 quart in to bring it to the top of the hash marks... 10 quarts out, 10 quarts in...

Hmm, seems like I might not be the only one seeing this per wakespeak and Camrolina.
Next oil change I will aim to make a good measurement of the amount of oil that comes out to better understand. With hot oil and letting drain for 30min-ish feels like I am getting most anything that's gonna come out. Drip is down to a drop every few seconds at that point. Found this curious as every other vehicle I've owned always had the "can't get every last drop out" so the fill amount to normal on dipstick was always a bit less than specified capacity.

Interesting how mixed the results are, even 1LE-ness doesn't seem to make an obvious difference.
I always put 10.0 quarts in (I don't even order an extra bottle, which I probably should) and get a subsequent reading nearly at the top of hashed section of the dipstick.

My 1LE is in the club "10 quarts put me at 1/3", so I usually put 10 quarts and then add 0.3-0.5 quarts more.

10 qts right in the middle or the hash marks, good to go!

First oil change @ 1500 miles. Put in10 qts and is at top mark on dipstick. Installed the Votex magnetic drain plug. Installed the ZL1 Addon lift pads while up on the Raceramps.

I think you are on to something with your thoughts of the dip stick length.
I think the correct thing to do is to put 10 quarts in and check the dipstick reading. That is your full mark.

376 cubic inches of fun

My experience has always been that the spec oil volume is exactly at the upper limit of the dipstick. You just need to fully warm up the oil and then wait for drain-down.
