They said the new formula for 2017 year vehicles has been submitted but not approved.

Seemingly Dexos certification = confusion ...... the oil forum is going through the same probelm.
FWIW It looks like Dexos 1 gen 2 is a revised list for 2017 with 777 less entries than before. Pennzoil Ultra isnt even on the list for Sept. 2017. Dexos 2 seems to be the same list shown as last year; the same 155 entries; not seeing a new list for 2017 posted yet. So would you roll with what is on the list or the bottle label? Wonder what GM Dexos opinion would be? http://www.gmdexos.com/owner/brands/ |

What's the point of dexos2 in a gasoline engine? Emissions?

Great question.
Not sure what the ZL1 needs for track vs daily driving. The OP has that answer. For the 2016 SS; the owners manual is specifying using Dexos 2 5w40 for tracking the car. Otherwise Dexos 1 Gen 1 is ok for daily driving. FWIW The Dexos Gen 2 list seems to be oriented for the 2018 MY releases since it is effective Sept. 2017. IMHO Requiring Dexos 2 for tracking seems like another hurdle in the warranty coverage program. When asking the local dealer about Dexos 2; they seem to think i am referring to Dexos gen 2; 2 totally different topics adding more confusion for the consumer to wade through. |

There's a few things you need to understand before digging too deep into this. Especially for those to whom this is all new info.
First, we're discussing the recommended oil for track days - not daily driving, weekend cruises...stick to Dexos1 5w-30 for that. Second, Dexos1 and Dexos2 are GM approval certifications, nothing more. They aren't "grades" of oil. Third, the performance engineers recommend 0w-40, or 5w-40 for their viscosity while on the track and operating at high rpms and high temperatures. But here's the catch: Dexos1 doesn't certify an oil above 30 weight. Dexos1 is primarily for gas engines, and Dexos2 is primarily for diesel and Europe (emissions). Normally, I'm a big fan of Mobil 1 0w-40 Euro blend...but I am planning to use the Valvoline 5w-40 specifically listed in the performance supplement, or the Motul 8100 X-Clean 5w-40 that meets Dexos 2 cert...unless something new comes out or earns a certification. (I have no interest in running the Mobil 1 15w-50, and changing it every time I go to the track, though...) EDIT: I find it very interesting that they recommend a Valvoline oil in print, because Valvoline fought very hard against Dexos1 certification when it first came out, even though they had oils that exceeded the requirements. That tells me the engineers did some homework with this one... |

Also, +1 to Mr. Wyndham. It says on the description of dexos1 and dexos2 that "2" is for diesel engines and places with more strict emissions requirements. Also, the performance supplement only recommends the dexos2 stuff y'all have been talking about for track cars only. Day-to-day is supposed to stick with the 5w-30. I guess if you live in warmer climates (like here in LA) you could probably get away with the Xw-40 year-round because I've been running the DOT-4 brake fluid in my '13 ZL1 year-round too. However, unless I find a time when I'll have my car on the racetrack for more than a weekend at a time, I'm going to stick to the 5w30.

I always used Pennzoil Ultra Platinum which is now Euro Platinum.
Doesn't appear to be Dexos 2 though. |

Those who do 1000 mile oil changes or track day changes, I can say that the Edge product is not bad at all. I like Motul but it degraded the paper media used in a Fram filter a couple years back so I choose to change to Motul only prior to track day. I change back to Castrol after the sessions along with the AC Delco filter. I'm sure some of you are rolling your eyes on the frequency of oil changes but my philosophy has less to do with oil breakdown than it does with inspection. Changing the engine oil allows me a peek inside the engine that is very valuable. It's often the first communication of a problem. You can even send your cars 'blood' off to a lab for analysis. I do that every 10,000 miles for about $28 Doesn't hurt to check the media type in your filter if you're sticking to a dexos2 for DD. The dexos 1 is a blend and easier on non-synthetic filter types. My thoughts, not necessarily lab facts...

This link appears to name the oils that are both dexos 1 and dexos 2 approved;
