how to read the engine oil level?

ok so to start off, its not my first time changing oil on a car but boy does Camaro makes a simple procedure complicated! Ive added and drained oil about 3 times now . I added about 9 quarts and checked the dipstick, the oil was at the very bottom. I added a little bit more Until the oil on the dipstick was at the middle..... simple enough right. I ran the engine for about 5 min then turned it off and let it sit for 10 min. Checked the dipstick and it was full! I checked it again the next day when the oil was called and it was still full. I Drained maybe a quart and checked the dipstick, it was at the very bottom of the hash marks. I drove to the gym and back let it sit for 30 min and then checked the oil level was full! wtf? how is this even possible?

I've always found it easiest to check it in the morning when it is cold and all the oil has drained into the pan .

so for v8, you would add 9 quarts and then come back the next day and check if you need to top up?

My car has been standing for 2 days without a use. When I checked the oil level yesterday it was full. I came to check today after work and it was at half level. how is this even possible? I haven't touched it in 2 days.

I've noticed that too but usually if I flip the stick over it will read correct on the other side. If one side reads correctly and the other is completely unreasonable I go by the side that makes sense.

I was taught to pull the stick, wipe it down, reinsert, then pull it to check. This might give you more consistency.

Check 2 or 3 times wiping clean between each read.. take mental average. Dip rope kinda sucks - prefer the metal w twist.. easier to get clean read.

You need to add 10 quarts. That is what the car calls for. This is by far the easiest motor ive ever changed oil on and checking the oil is a breeze....
