Im not an oil expert and Im not saying that was what caused the problem, but Im thinking if I had a better oil it might have helped. I do know their is a rating called high temp high shear, and its very low for gas saving with a 0w40 oil and about a point higher for the 15w50. So it uses more gas. Harder on the oil pump I suppose by the same token. I think the same for the 5w50. I never drive the car when its 30 degrees out. So i was thinking that it might have lived if their was more strength in the oil film barrier or what ever. Parts got together on number 8 for sure. I think that's what the castro edge is about, but like many no listing of hths rateing.

With a boosted application I would want that oil up to at least 160 before reefing on the throttle. Not warming up an engine with that much power is a good way to spin a bearing.

True, especially for a cammed car. For what it's worth..... when I did my 650 package on my 2010SS at Lingenfelter, the 3 year warranty was void if I didn't use Mobil 1 15w-50. I never left it out in the cold - always garaged and not started from subzero temps. Yes, the higher zinc level over a super long period can lead to Cat failure - but I would much rather replace cats after 10 years (if you're running them), than shorten the life of my engine. My 2021 ZLE requires the Mobil 1 15W-50 for track use and after my engine break-in period I plan on running the 15W-50 year round for the same reason and uses. Yes, the Cats might not last as long and Yes, it's not as fuel efficient - but if I bought these cars for fuel efficiency, I purchased the wrong car!

Oil has to be one of the most popular topics here, and I'm in the majority using Mobil 1 ESP Full Synthetic 0W-40 (as does my Chevy dealer)

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong; but according to the current owners manual, 15w50 is only recommended for the ZL1 1LE during track use because the care offers greater lateral grip with it's R-Compound tires and added aero.

Correct... Only for the ZR! and ZLE due to higher g-forces. And it has to be swapped back out after the track days.

Ok so technically if your required to use 15W50 for 1le on the track and 0W40 on the street. Would a zl1 owner have to use 15W50 on the track if it's using R tires as well or have similar aero upgrades?

Is so can you drive home from the track on 15W50 let's say 3hrs?

Mlee,

This appears to have changed in 2020. The 2020 High Performance Owner's Manual Supplement doesn't mention 15W-50 any longer and makes no distinction for the ZL1 1LE.

(edit: I was wrong. See below)
