My '21 ZL1 MSRP: $68,935 (A10, CF hood insert, Nav, and CF shift knob includes gas guzzler tax)

I paid under msrp for my ZL1. I got $2k in rebates plus a dealer discount. So, for only a little more money, I got a car that will destroy the Mach 1 on a track and in a straight line.

I realize for some, that price will be worth it to have a Mach 1, but for very similar amounts of money a ZL1 will be a better performance buy.

Price-wise, a decked out Mach 1 w/ handling package isn't in the realm of SS 1LE price - it's in the ZL1 price bracket. Yikes (if you're Ford).
The pricing on these cars is quite ridiculous, they're charging a lot for the "collectability" on this model. Then dealers will come along and throw on an extra $2k-$5k markup, and the cars will still sell with no problem.

Don't underestimate blind brand loyalty and faux "collectability". Ford will have no issue selling these cars for over MSRP, and a good amount of people who buy them will have every inclination that these cars are better than any Chevy ever produced because that's how their brains work.

I like your word choice. Fortunately for Ford, their customers are more than willing to buy products with absurd, asinine, and stupid prices.

Before we give Ford too bad of a time, know that I just built a 2SS with enough options to push msrp to $62,590! I'd rather have a Mach 1 Premium than a $62k 2SS, personally.

It was a 2SS A10, wild design cherry package, 1LE suspension upgrade (not the entire 1LE package), black lug nuts, SS upgraded wheels, sunroof, Nav, Magnetic dampers, dual mode exhaust, CF shift knob, Recaros, Alloy pedals, Microfiber steering wheel, and embroidered center console lid.

The highest I could get a GT PP1 was to $58k.

Man, you're completely hooked, just bought a ZL1 and still playing with GM's online configurator

I was just trying to find out how expensive I could make an SS. It may go even higher, as I didn't try very many combinations; I just selected things that it let me select. A lot of the options are package dependent.

Fair point. But your case is different because you added almost the maximum factory appearance packages. The Mach 1 doesn't have nearly as many options for factory appearance packages, and neither does the GT. The Wild Cherry Design Package 2 is $5,600 alone. When considering handling/performance packages only, Camaros are a better value than Mustangs.

Camaro: $44,195
-1SS
-6-speed
-1LE

Mustang: $48,200
-GT base
-6-speed
-Performance Package
-301A
-Active Valved Exhaust (1LE has this, PP doesn't)
-Magneride Suspension (ditto from above, requires 301A)

You can get a 2SS 1LE for less than $1,000 more than a Mustang non-Premium GT PP with active exhaust and Magneride. If you don't want the active exhaust or Magneride then you can get a GT PP for $585 less than a 1SS 1LE.

Either way IMO the pricing on these cars is getting insane and out of hand lol. I know I know, inflation, better tech, safety, faster blah blah blah.

Bingo. The Mustang and Camaro are both priced beyond what a financially responsible middle-class person can afford. You know when 72 and 84 month financing options are available, the buyer is purchasing a product with an inflated price.

Yes, the performance and comfort of the Mustang/Camaro is better than at any time in its history, but it's not worth it (at least to me) to go out and buy a new model of either car in any trim. I bought my SS used with 36 month financing and I still have remorse that I didn't put off gratification long enough to pay cash. I can't imagine making payments on any vehicle for 6 or 7 years.

Yeah, I know. I was just curious how high I could get an SS on my first attempt to crack $60k on the builder. I hit $62k+ without any kind of back and forth. I doubt I even maxed it out as that was my one and only attempt at an expensive build. I didn't even use the most expensive wheel option!

Eh, what's the point of paying cash if you can get ~2% financing? You can make more money by putting what you would have put down to work for you.

I put quite a bit down on my ZL1, but at 2.4% interest rate, I was hesitant to put more than about 35% down...I put enough down to lower the payment to something well under what I can easily afford. Could I have put more down? Sure, but what's the point with that interest rate?

I wrote a check for my wife's Volvo XC90 T6. I don't regret that decision since I like not having a payment on her car. Plus, interest rates were higher 2.5 years ago when I bought that car for her.

Now, if someone is getting 72-84 month financing and can barely afford the payment and can't put much down, then that is obviously a mistake.

Nothing wrong with it. I just prefer making a cash transaction when I can. In most cases, I have the cash to do it by making my money work for me during the period of time I'm putting off the gratification of driving a newer car.

Mach 1 is too expensive relative to its competition and so are many Mustang performance options. PP1 is now 6,200 dollars. This was a 2,500 dollar package in 2015 MY. I'm also not a fan of the looks of the Mach 1.

I recall years ago Mustang crowd talking about how much more expensive the Camaro is and for the couple grand difference they could make their Mustang better. Well, to compete with just a base SS, you have to throw PP1 on the Mustang and it's more expensive than the Camaro MSRP wise. This seems to be across the board.

I did buy a new 2020 GT Premium with 401a, PP1, Active Exhaust, and Safe and Smart package for 39.5k. That's an almost 51k dollar car MSRP wise now. I personally couldn't imagine spending 50-60k on a Mustang GT right now.

You got a good deal on that car. I agree that in terms of handling the base GT doesn't compete with the base SS, and I don't think the Performance Package is worth $6,295.
