I would spend my money with KaTech. But would also consider Vengence. Would "never" hand any money to Hennessy or buy a car that they modified. In my view having Hennessey de-values your car.

Katech because other guys don't seem to value a new oil pump, a "must do" mod when you have the motor out

HPE does it with heads/cam/headers/10%, without touching the TB or SC. Looking at KaTech's 850, they appear to port the snout and inlet, and use a 103mm.

I seriously doubt Katech would turn business away if the customer said they didn't want to spend money on an oil pump, nor would another shop say they wouldn't swap the pump if the customer wanted to. I asked for it and I got one.

+1 for Katech, absolutely amazing experience through two significant builds on my 17 ZL1.
My list was short when I started my journey, it was either Vengeance Racing or Katech. I would rather pay a little more up front than save some dollars only to have to rebuild an engine because I took a short cut or went with the "cheapest" price.

Lots of good shops out there that are "big name," will cost you a decent chunk of change, but it will be done right.
I'm in the camp that neither Hennessey nor Callaway would build my car. I build and tune my own stuff, but if I were taking it somewhere and money were no object, Vengeance would be first on my list (doesn't hurt that they are 15 minutes from my house, either), and Katech would be second. Many other shops with plenty of experience out there as well, to list a few: LMR RPM JRE Redline Motorsports Nickey GPI ... and many more. If you're close enough to any of those, I'd pay them a visit and make your own judgement. I honestly think you'd have a more personalized experience with any of those, and most of them likely offer some sort of warranty on their packages, too.

CSP has been replacing the oil pump for a few years now with the Truck Pump as a replacement even before the katech pump was even available. The guys at CSP also do very good work, they have dozens of cars there every time I am in the place waiting for their turn. I would add them to the list if your in the tri state area.

Pick your poison, they say. Many well known reputable shops can be found. I was fortunate to have a local shop here (previously WeaponX) now Top Speed Cincy. My area is a hot spot for performance cars and reputation tops the list for who to go to. What do you have local?

I am a big time motorcycle fanatic, I'm fairly pretty good with the performance side of sport cars, back in the day I would read sportbike UFO shootouts? Where the best of the best builders, tuners would go head to head, some guys modded there own personal bikes. My point is why don't these shops go head to head in a central location to show there talent building, tuning, and racing, for me if a shop car came in at 4th place, but only a few tenths slower I would still consider that 4th place shop, driver reaction, a tire spin, slight tuning difference. But when a shop is not in a Y2K shootout, etc. They couldn't get my money, Big dogs run with big dogs, and pups do advertising, and a lot of people fall for puppies barking like big dogs until you see the pups peeing on your feet.

Even before my car was delivered, I had contacted HPE for the 850 package. I got a price of roughly 22k not counting shipping to n from CA.
Once I got my car and realized it would behoove me to learn the car first before throwing a bunch more power at it, which I'm glad I did. Not only that but I was unaware of the stories, whether true or not, until i did some more reading.. That pretty much turned me off to the idea. Was it right? I dunno but it was enough for me to hold off. Trying to look back at a quote, hpe quickly deletes them, which I'm not to thrilled with. Their sales pitch is great and I'm assuming they kick out some great cars, otherwise they wouldn't be in business but I just wasn't willing to take that ride. I've seen posts on other forums and it wasn't pleasant. That said, I realized my goal, for now, is a true 650whp. We shall see how that changes though. |
