Weight Reduction update

I removed the passenger and back seats before my appointment for alignment (and other stuff) so that the alignment will be based on track weight (with me sitting in it).

I had a chance to weigh them so for now I will be saving 87lbs from seats and 38lbs from the wheels and tires which make up to a total of 125lbs weight reduction. So I am thinking the car should weigh about 3620lbs (since factory curb weight is 3745lbs)

Once I get the R7 (2lbs on each corner), Girodisc front rotors (4lbs on each side) and lightweight battery (possibly 25-30lbs savings) it will be an additional 40lbs of savings which makes it below 3600lbs. ChaseRace have a scale so I will have him weigh the car .

Since some members warned me about the annoying buffeting issue at the track days that caused by removing the back seat (possibly due to opening to the trunk ...causes a turbulence maybe?), I decided to cover the trunk opening area.

After thinking about it, I think I might have found an quick and easy solution (or a dumb one)

I used the existing trunk mat, upside down, put a small hole with a center punch and zip tied it to the hook where the backseats connects, added a couple velcro pieces to connect and hold the trunk mat in place ( velcro pieces can be reused also, haha)

I will report back if it does the job

I like the idea, but I think the buffeting is there even with the seats in. At least for me it is...

Hmm I don't recall it was that bas (when I had the backseats) but maybe because I was driving two windows down

I always track with both windows down and I think it gets bad anywhere over about 110.

Oh ok that makes sense at our local tracks here in PNW, there are maybe 1-2 straightaways that I can pass those speeds and it's not constantly over those triple digits so maybe I didn't pay attention b/c of that.

I picked up the car from ChaseRace yesterday so the following has been done:
  1. Engine oil changed (Mobil 1 0w-40)
  2. Front and rear swaybars installed (both in center hole for 30% more stiffnes)
  3. Knuckle grinding and bolt hole extension mods have been done for more camber
  4. Alignment done
  5. GM OEM longer wheel studs installed for 5mm spacer

It looks like after some additional trimming and welding to the strut ears, I was able to get about 6mm clearance with -2.7 camber.

BEFORE (this is after initial grinding not the OEM look)

and after (unfortunately the photo I received is not from the same angle but some additional clearance gained after trimming spot welding area)

ChaseRace also weighed the car while it's on the alignment rack, full tank of gas, passenger and rear seats have been removed. With Apex 18" Toyo RR set

final numbers after alignment :

I received the my spare Toyo RR set in same sizes (295/315/30/18) that I ordered after seeing the special discount so no wait times for the second set or if I cord the fronts earlier than expected.

Lately, I was thinking about a pair of custom front wheels in 18x10.5" (with about +10 offset to push the whole thing outwards as I have tons of clearance outside with -2.7 camber now) and test it against to my 18x10" Apex wheels, so instead of running 295 -315/30-18 Front and rear, I would see how effective the 315/30/18 SQ setup would be.
Since we have a front heavy car, adding more front grip would be great to fight with understeer, especially since I now have the adjustable front sway bar and I could even make it stiffer to combine with the 315s up front for even better traction and stability (as well as sharper turn in).

However, after some careful consideration I figured for about the same money for a pair of custom 18" wheels, I can get a whole new set of Apex ARC-8 wheels in 19" sizes so that I can try the Goodyear Supercar 3R tires that most people had great experience with. Unfortunately there's no good available sizes for 18" wheels. I decided go with 19x10.5 +22 and 19x11" +43mm Apex ARC-8 wheels as they surprisingly weight about the same as my 18" Apex SM 10 wheels. That way I will be able to try 305-30-19 Supercar 3R tires Square setup and compare against the 295/315 staggered Toyo RRs. I ordered both 19" wheels and Supercar3R tires last night .

I really want to see if the SC3R tires live up to the hype and how they will compare against to RRs. Hopefully they will be ready before my scheduled event on March 20-21st

Great progress! The Provoste strut mod works great. I did mine in my garage with less than ideal tools. I will be running the SC3R 305 square setup March 14-15 for the first time. I may have to get those swaybars depending how it goes.

I agree, it's a great mod. I was able to achieve a bit more camber with the previous car (~ -2.9 ) but it's maxed out at -2.7 this time. If I feel like I need a bit more I will think about it and so maybe we can modify the knuckle a little.

Hopefully we both like these tires
