1st gear is useless

Hey guys, I currently have headers with x pipe, intake, and e85. I ran a single cab Chevy 2014-2018 5.3 with the same bolt ons and e85 tune from a 20 roll. We are tuned by the same shop (New era in socal) He said 20s were a good roll for him. So I gave him his 20 and We ran it and I spun so bad in first and had to play catch up to end up winning him by 2-3 cars. Especially with this cold weather i don’t think I can do a 20-30 roll. Need to be at least a 40. Any similar situations

I dunno if theres any common consensus on rolls but to me, a 20 roll makes absolutely 0 sense. Might as well take it from a dig then. 30-40 rolls sure but 20 is damn near a standstill anyway

I mean, you are comparing against a truck with more weight and maybe even 4WD. I once played with an Audi RS3 a bit and I couldn't catch it unless we get to very illegal speeds because it has AWD and I don't. Doesn't help that GY SC3 isn't very grippy when it's cool outside.

My stock SS 1LE with a 6-speed manual will spin the rear tires in 1st when I floor it unless the conditions are very good. It's just the way it is, especially if it's cold out.

Something that can help is to feed the throttle to the floor rather than just abruptly floor it. Throttle control is pretty important in situations like this, though even that will have its limits.

Yea he said his 20 rolls were his best and he said he knew he’ll loose if we went from a 40. So I just gave him what he wanted. Forgot to mention I’m also on stock 275’s with about 60% tread left.

I agree, no way I can do WOT in 1st and/or 2nd regardless of the tire or weather. Rolling in 3rd gear at 30 mph is doable but it still might break loose in Manual. I never use Auto except for cruising. The downshift at WOT is a killer.

It’s just physics. Same thing happened to me. Some ding-dong in a pickup was calling me out at a stoplight on a cold fall morning. When the light turned green, my traction control strangled the car so bad I thought I broke something. I went past him about 200ft later at warp speed, but it was painful to watch. 😀
Unless you do a massive burnout and then immediately do your 20 roll, I think your results will always be the same.

If you want to use all of first gear, you WILL need rear tires capable of putting the power down without spinning. Nitto drag radials, mickey Thompson et street, or a similar grippy tire are a necessity if hooking all of 1st is a priority. The weather has to also be in your favor, you will struggle to hook under 40°F regardless of tires on a powerful rwd car.

when my 1LE was stock it would dead hook first in the summer and down to about 65* if i cleaned the tires off first.

basically fbo now so first gear is useless at any temp and second gear as well under 65*.

Bone stock 1LE here, ps4s. Car hooks great above 70°f. Below that first gear has poor traction at WOT, second gear is still quite a handful when no lift shifting. Doesn't feel solidly planted until well into 3rd. Once it gets below 60 I turn off competitive mode and just drive in sport. Suspension always set to track.

Actually, if you turn the suspension a tick softer, it might help with grip when you are accelerating heavily. I heard people at drag strips actually use Touring suspension setting so the car squats more, which helps it hook up better.

Sent from toaster or something

Dually noted, I've read that on here. Honestly haven't played with suspension setting much. The rear seems to go to full stiffness under accel. That solid planted feeling in corners is super addicting though

Nail my new 2021 LT1 from a slow roll and it is sideways. Stock tires don't cut it.

My 2 SS A8 will really spin at 20 WOT. Launch control works very well though from a stop (convertible which is heavier). Won't beat many cars from 20 WOT due to traction issues but sure is fun.
