How To Fit 18 x 12" Square

When I got my first wheel/tire setup for CAMC autox I went with a ZLE sized staggered setup because I believed 18x12s wouldn't fit up front on my SS 1LE, and at the time the Falken 660s in 315/19 and 305/19 were the hot tire. Now I'm running 295/35/18 RE71RS, on 18x12 they are definitely faster. Here's how I fit this setup on my car:

-Obtain a set of 18x12 et41 wheels, Apex offers a few choices.

-Install Vorshlag camber plates with the plates at the maximum camber setting and then adjust the camber to ~3.5 degrees at the strut. This will give you a bit more clearance than maxing out camber at the strut and then adjusting at the plates.

- You'll need the right spacers and studs. I got some inexpensive Titan brand 1.5" hub-centric spacers and hammered out the studs that came with them. If you have magride, you may or may not want to add a 3-5mm spacer as well, it will reduce how much you need to grind the strut. MSI studs are for Mustang GT, PN 10.0067, 97mm length. Also, use MSI lug nuts. The MSI studs fit in the holes the original studs in the Titan spacers were in without modification. It's a somewhat tight fit but that's a good thing.

- Grind the strut so you have a few mm of clearance or get aftermarket coilovers. If getting coilovers for a magride car, obtain a suspension module from a car WITHOUT magride so you don't throw error codes or have to use those stupid magride delete kits.

I have an SS 1LE, so it has magride, I'm installing MCS coilovers this winter but, but here's a pic of the install with the OEM magride struts. It requires a decent amount of grinding but not much different than an 18x11 with a 1" spacer that's commonly done.

One thing you want to keep in mind is that even though the wheel clears your tires might still rub on the actual strut if the spacing between them is not far enough. Mine was rubbing a little bit on 18x11 with 315 hoosiers. Probably not an issue with 295's. And it only rubs on the track when the tires are working, in the garage there is some space between the tire/strut.

Yeah, so with 12s you're less likely to hit the strut and more likely to hit the fender as there's more wheel toward the outside and a tire will be less pinched.

I have a friend who has run 335/30/18 BFGs on this setup with coilovers, but this depends on firmer than stock suspension to avoid rubbing on the fenders. My 295 setup is VERY close to the front fenders but so far so good... no rubbing on the strut or fender.

As with everything YMMV, I make no guarantees. It works for me though, and I posted this as I rarely see folks going 18x12, perhaps because, like me, they listened to other folks who said it wasn't possible. It IS possible, and it's a faster setup than 11s up front in my case.

Agreed! I had 18x12 +6 wheels fitted in the front to clear the coilover, but added a 3 mm spacer so that the 315 tire clears too.

Yup, that's close. With an 18x12 et 41 and the 1.5" spacer it comes out to et3, which is what you ended up with after adding the 3mm spacer.
