Mustang GT traded for a Camaro SS with review
Traded my 2015 base Mustang GT auto with 3.55 gears for a 2017 Camaro 1SS A8 with the dual mode exhaust. Both cars can be modded of course but I'm comparing these cars in stock base model form. My opinion on the differences (all below subjective of course).
Engine/Acceleration: My biggest complaint with the coyote 5.0 is its higher rpm power and torque characteristics and numb throttle response. Not actually slow but the power delivery made it feel like a powerful n/a V6. Not much down low and even WOT left me thinking “that’s it”? To get the car to really move you have to drive it like you stole it. Stock feels lacking to me for 435 horse. The LT1 on the other hand delivers. Power and torque in pretty much every gear and rpm. Put your foot down and it surges forward with authority! Transmission: Camaro paddles much more responsive with faster firmer shifts at wot. Mustang paddle response is slow in comparison. The 6R80 does shift pretty quickly at wot and is a proven to be quite stout. Handling: Much higher level of grip, sharper steering, turn in and response with the Camaro. The Stang felt floaty and disconnected in comparison. I love the feel of the Camaros smaller flat bottom steering wheel. Seats: Base Camaro cloth seats much more comfortable. Mustang seats made my back ache even during my 30 mile commute. Interior: Edge to the Camaro. Overall similar in overal quality, the Camaro’s is more advanced. The mustang gauges are good but I like the Camaro’s more. The base GT comes with a tiny 4 inch screen (come on Ford!) Visibility: Mustang wins here but I haven’t found the Camaro to be as bad they say. The right rear blind spot is pretty nasty but remedied by adjusting your mirrors properly. Sound: Camaro wins here. Sounds like a real V8. I always found the coyote 5.0 to sound a bit weird and too quiet from the factory. Looks: The S550 Stang looks better from some angles but I think the Camaro looks good from all angles. Overal stock vs stock out of the box, the Camaro SS puts a smile on my face! The base GT felt like an outdated hoopty in comparison. Camaro SS Mustang GT

I always wanted a mustang for as long as I could remember. As soon as I test drove the 2017 2SS, that all changed. Lol. You are right. After driving both the Camaro and mustang, the Maro just beats the Mustang in almost every category. Chevy really brought it with this one, and was able to pull a life long Stang fan away!
Never thought I'd be driving a Camaro after how much shit I talked about them, and yet here I am. |

Thanks for the review and congrats on your new purchase. Look at our fast list and you'll see that the Camaro is a great performer at the drag strip and loves mods. You won't be able to keep it stock for long. Have fun with your new ride, I love mine and haven't bought anything else after driving a 16.

Congrats, let's see some pics.
I just sold my 2015 Mustang GT base auto with 3.55 gears as well. I had fun modding it and enjoyed the 2 years of ownership. My experience with the car is the complete opposite of yours. Sorry the car didn't do it for you. Odd considering you had 2 prior 5.0's so you should have been used to the way the motor was. I just switched to a scat pack Charger because I needed more room and 4 doors, but didn't want to miss out having a fun RWD high powered V8. I do love the 8 speed vs old 6 speed, even if it was stout. Came close to purchasing a 16/17 SS sedan. Just wish they would have thrown the LT1 in there. That and jungle green was discontinued. Loved my G8 GT and figured I couldn't go wrong with another Holden. Looking forward to see the comparisons on the 2018 Mustang and Camaro SS, and then the future competition. |

I have always wondered why a car with only 20 less hp and 150 lbs more mass was so much slower than the SS.

Congratulations! Need pics though & a list of mods being thought of!
Many (including myself) have had a history of many Mustangs. The composure & performance, handling, chiseled looks, & for me, switching to the Alpha platform made me come take a look. Been a long time since i owned a Camaro, but this car is everything that was promised! I'm not a fanboy of any particular brand, but really do think that competition & technology have brought us back into the glory days for car performance from the various factories. 2018 Mustang will up their game, I'm sure Chevy is going to respond. Good times to be a car enthusiast! |
