Has anyone ever downgraded from V8 to V6 or 2.0?
Just wondering. Not that I'm considering doing this, however, in the event that gas got really expensive or something, you never know, it could become necessary. Or, if I just got tired of not using all the power and wanted something I could rev out on the street and not worry about something bad happening. Has anyone ever downgraded like this? And do you have any regrets? I'd prefer to hear from people who downgraded within the 6th generation but I guess it also counts if you downgraded coming from a 5th gen. I think it counts a little less though, because V6 sixth gen is a huge step up from a 5th gen V6.

Had a camaro SS ‘17. Went to a Whipple S2 Mustang GT (680hp) down to a VW diesel 4 turbo. I miss the V8 sound more than anything. But I don’t miss not being able wail on the car and worry about jail time as before you know it, going triple digits.
I like flogging my VW all over the place and still going somewhat sane speeds. I can use almost all its power vs driving half throttle while still getting almost 3x the gas mpg of my Whippled GT. I’ve even toyed on back roads with much faster cars and when they decide to prove how much faster they are, they fly by going 90 in a 45. Good for them. May get another V8 one day but not sure. Was looking at maybe another SS but really more for looks and having the power. But not sure. Heck I’ve been renting an ‘18 Hyundai Accent all week and flooring it everywhere. It’s a hoot driving the little sedan. I’m a sucker for simple light cars you can just wail on. |

I still have my 2010 SS. It sounds great but has way more power than I can use on the street in a safe manner.
The next car will be a step down in power. I would be ordering a V6 Camaro in the spring if not for the A8 transmission problems. Maybe there's a Mustang Ecoboost in my future. |

V8 never made sense for me in the new muscle/sports car era. Higher insurance, Premium gas and 8K north of the V6 price.
If you are wondering, keep what you have. You don't want to regret your decision. |

Had a V8 3rd gen, V8 4th gen,.... but that's not really a good comparison to current gen V8. LS1 and earlier are really about on par with the current gen v6 at best (considering stock).
So going from that to the V6 isn't really compromising anything for me. Even the sound isn't bad. It's a far cry from the change you get by going to 4 cyl. I think the change would be much harder for someone who is used to the current gen v8's power. I think most people are worried about being underpowered for the weight of the car (like a challenger with anything less than 400hp). Trust me. The lgx can accelerate just fine. mid 5 second 0-60's on the street is plenty to be faster than 99.9% of every other car lined up at the street light. Reaching top speed is not a problem. If you can't modulate your foot to avoid speed in a V8 camaro, you wont be any better off in the lgx. If you want the car to protect you from yourself, get a V6 challenger. You can walk faster than they accelerate. |

However my insurance went down on my 18 ss 1le. I only pay 90 bucks a month full coverage. I also got 8k off the sticker. I also only drive 10 miles a day and get 18mpg. What was your argument again? |

They didn't pick the V8 because it was the best. They picked it because it was cheap and the laws were very new (or not yet written) to force them to be good citizens and not shove inefficient dirty engines out that got maybe 200-ish hp out of a 5liter v8. You like it, like people enjoy crap poor people food. Because it's what you grew up with and nostalgia. |

I got a second car recently, a ‘18 Miata. It has 1/3 the power of the Camaro. Still fun as heck.

I had a modified 5th gen V6 and really enjoyed it. If I had the same power in the lighter 6th gen I think it would be a real hoot. In the end, I went V8 with my 6th gen b/c the V6 I wanted was within spitting distance (pricewise) of a 1SS with a couple options. So I went with the dream of owning a modern V8 sports car. That said...I often feel all that power I have is a complete waste on the street.

The Camaro is no longer a muscle car it’s a sports car now, even Chevrolet says that.
Next one will be a SS. Although my V6 is a daily driver and perfect for what it is. Even as a V6 you’re faster than almost every car on the street. It sounds sick. Better than the I4. My thing is, we are all Camaro fans, of different engine options are there to make money for GM to make the Camaro I’m all for the choices. Enjoy your Camaros! Be lucky you’re not driving a Cruze or a Civic. Because I am. |

I enjoy my I4 couldn't afford the V8 new and I'll never buy a used car again. The V6 is a sweet ride but it's a bitch to mod. I'm happy with my 12.7s 1/4 Mile 4banger.

Price is definitely a consideration... gas mileage, perhaps, although neither the V6 nor (I think) the I4 will save you a lot unless you drive them like a grandma... insurance, maybe, although my insurance didn't change more than a couple bucks per month after the V6 to V8 upgrade... a little "hoonability" while retaining the excellent handling, well, that could also be it.
