For $20K, any reputable shop can build you a 1000rwhp, semi-reliable LT4.

Not worth it to swap an LT4 for an LT5.

Especially true now that low side fuel solutions are in place that work up to 1100 rwhp! The only advantage to the LT5 is the 2nd injectors will keep the valves clean. And this can cleaning effect be duplicated with methanol injection. |

I just put it up because so many guys want the LT5 in there ZL1, if a ZL1 came from the factory with LT5, that would make it 82-92 grand at least.

Well I think it's worth it. The motor is 17k and there are some engine rebates and black Friday codes on gmpartsdirect and iamgmparts. Any how selling your lt4 for 8k which is what they have been going for on ebay would cost about 9k in upgrading.. A 2650 will set you back 5300 plus. Port injection is another 4 to 5k if you try to set it up with whipple or procharger..Tuning and getting port injection to work in either combo will be similar cost.
Anyway the LT5 won't fit unless willing to cut some on the fire wall under the window and modify the hood. You would still need to change the cam in the LT5 to make any power but wouldn't cost must since the motor would be nib and not installed. To make a lt4 better.. $2300 R & R motor (the price cancels each other since both setups would need this) $1900 Cam kit (includes c7r chain, trunion up grade ) $6500 Lingenfelter fuel setup ( chose this setup since it's the only thing that can make power like Port injection on the Lt5) $5300 2650 blower $1000 both need aux pump or low side So I call bs you can't do it the for same or cheaper if you have apple's to apple's fuel systems.

We are debating opinions at this point so please don't take this as an attack.

Don't forget you still need an ECU to run the LT5, the crate motor will not have one. Motec is an option for even more $$$$ Modding the LT4 and forgoing the supplemental fuel rails is the simplest and likely more reliable option. |

There's NO WAY in hell it's worth it to spend $17,000+ on an engine UNLESS it's a 1100+ RWHP capable Texas Speed sleeved engine or iron block or similar custom built engine. Taking a 900-1100 HP engine out to put in a 900-1100 RWHP capable engine is stupid, expensive, and like trying to put a square peg in a round hole.
An LT4 with an F-series Procharger and Cam is an 1100+ RWHP engine. An LT4 with a Whipple is a 900+ RWHP engine. An LT4 with a 2650 is probably also a 900-950 RWHP engine, maybe 1000 RWHP. Or you can LT5 swap it, cut up the car, mess with fuel, ECU, etc. to end up at more or less a more complicated-blower-swapped-LT4. Or put TTs on it. The choice is endless. The LT5, I believe, even if it was fully built probably is maybe a 950 RWHP engine when done max effort (Heads/Cam/Ported Blower/FBO/etc.). So it's going to be outperformed by most blower swapped LT4s. Did I mention the work to do a blower swap is usually a bolt on kit compared to the chopped up LT5 swap? With the LSA vs LS9, you had some reasons. The internals, blower, etc. were a serious upgrade. Again, if one is to swap engines, might as well put a sleeved 427 in with a real blower and make a comfortable 1100-1300 RWHP. At least that's a common, fool proof setup that's been on the market for a while now and is well proven. If you had an LT1 car, it maybe worth it. But the upgrade from an LT4 isn't there. |

From what I can see, the GM performance catalogue lists the LT4 & LT5 as being about $2500 apart (dry sump vs dry sump). That reflects not just the cost but the value to the buyer. So, were GM to build a ZL1 with the LT5 instead of the LT4 thats probably what the price difference would be. Maybe a little more if they upgrade the transmission and drivetrain a tick to handle the extra 100 hp but I doubt that would happen.
