Previous to this I experienced my rear acting as a full-time locker as some people have described. The car has 30,XXX miles on it. So, be careful and make sure the dealership does the fluid change. I couldn't find any current service bulletins but I know the fluid on my car was never replaced. Potentially something to be said about the longevity of the rear end if you don't replace fluids.
I had mine replaced in 04/16. My rear end is now grinding worse than ever. It gets down to 60 degrees and it does it.

Just had a very similar experience. At 5K miles I had the groan/grind at cold temperatures at slow sharp turns. Dealer did the S/B of drain, ( flush? ) refill. Problem got worse. Made the noise at higher and higher temperatures...well into the upper 60s/low 70s and it took longer and longer drive time for it to silence.

Brought it back again almost a month later. Tech did the S/B again, test drove it, stated noise still there. He then reflushed, refilled again. Noise gone. The next several days the temperature dropped sharply: The acid test! No noise at all. Well, it was barely present, but faded quickly over the next several drives as the new fluid worked it's way into the clutches. A week later, leaving work at 28F....at night...no sound at all.

Took my 2SS in for first oil change yesterday - and had them check the diff, due to the cold weather groan when first starting out. The were able to hear it, changed the fluid and advised if there was still an issue at next service they would repeat.

They did say the fluid would take a little time to work into the clutches (same language as above). Certainly reduced noise this AM. Will report back after a little driving.

My 18SS is also making that groaning sound with 3400 miles on it. 1st year of ownership and when the temperature got below about 60F it does it on the first turn or so when going out of a parking lot. I'll mention it when I bring it for next service to get the fluid swapped. At first I wasn't really worried about it but I've since noticed it's becoming louder.

So I had the TSB performed on mine this past weekend and 2-3 days later after the vehicle sits outside in mid 50s weather the groan is back on the 1st left hand turn after backing out of a parking spot. I'll give it a few more weeks before bringing it back. At least I have it documented that the dealer did hear the noise and did the fluid flush. At 3500 miles right now.

Ok Guys,

Giving back a little information for those that are still having this issue with the groaning diff. A while ago I drained and filled with Mobil1 Delvac 75w90, which is a really high end gear that is certified for a laundry list of different rigorous specs. I ran it with one container of the GM lsd additive. I found it to be basically better than the OEM fluid, although I did occasionally get some groaning still. Interestingly enough, I really was not getting any groan during cold weather but would sometimes get it in warmer weather. Odd. This fluid had about 20k miles on it, give or take, and came out in reasonably good shape. I'm not going to claim that it was gold colored but it certainly was a lot less nasty than I anticipated.

In the interest of further experimentation, I did a drain/refill today with a different fluid. I still believe the issue is at least in part due to the crap gear oil that GM uses. Today I installed Schaeffer 75w140 gear oil, which is also a very high-end (and kind of expensive) product. Assuming there are no big issues out of the gate, I will post back with some preliminary feedback in a week or two and then again once the weather changes.
