MPH does not = 1/4 time
Greetings,
I am hoping you could help me understand my 1/4 mile results. I ran a 12.56 at 115.94 with the stock tires at about 28psi. The car spun with a soft launch(not soft enough LOL). I have seen guys reporting on this site running 12.1's at 113-114. How could my car run a higher MPH then guys running 4 tenths lower in the quarter mile? Also it was a 2.169 60ft. Does hooking real well impact/lower your trap speed? What could I expect to run with DR's only no skinnies? 2016 1ss A8 9700mi CAI without a tune and a muffler delete 55 degree night 148ft alt. Thanks in advance for your input. John |

E.T. is traction dependent. your mph is in the ballpark of what a stock SS should see. Wheel spin can inflate your trap mph.
With DR's only expect a 12.20 or less depending on 60' and similar d/a. |

Covering more distance and accelerating for a longer period of time when you spin. Therefore the car can reach a higher mph. For example You can reach a higher mph accelerating for 13 seconds compared to 12.
Doesn’t always work out though. My best traps have been with good traction |

I have blown the tires off at the line, let out and coasted a bit, then punched the gas in frustration causing the trans to downshift 3 gears before taking off and trapped the same as i do on a pass where i dead hook....physics my ass.

Mph is more about the car’s power and et is more traction related. Better 60’ equals a better et

As far as MPH not equal to faster ET, I had a 4,000 pound M6 Twin Turbo 5th gen 1LE that in decent air would touch 130 mph. But the fastest I ever ran was 11.4 in it. It was an animal on the second half of the 1/4. 3.73 ZL1 Diff.

I've always heard a little spin produces higher trap speeds, but that hasn't been the case for me. For the most part, mph changes very little with or without spin, but I've always had higher trap speeds with less spin. There is a mph gain due to spin, but it's in the gain between any 2 points on the track, such as between the 1/8 and the 1/4. When you spin off the line, you're not accelerating as fast as possible and therefore are traveling at a slower mph by the time you get to the 1/8, which means it is going to take more time to get to the finish. So you end up with a larger mph gain between the 1/8 and 1/4. This is why the trap speeds stay pretty much the same whether you spin or not.

Thanks for the responses. In the end I want to see if my car can get into the 11's. Based off the MPH do you all think drag radials will get me there with no other changes?

Theoretically they could, but it's not guaranteed. My first run with drag radials (SS with A8) was 11.97@113 as I recall. But I had been running 12.0@114 with it bone stock, so for me, the gain from installing the drag radials on back was not very large at that time. Without tuning, the shift points might be done worse with the DRs on than they were with the stock tires, that seemed to happen to mine.

Between wnta1ss and driven2excess they've both hit 11s on DRs. I think dialing your car to consistent low 12s on stock setup will get you into the 11s easily on DRs bit your going to need to adjust your tire speed probably.
