Is this a TSB yet? Assuming not.

Most of the pump failures I've seen (poll thread and ZL1 exclusive FB page) had 2017 build dates. I'm not sure if that means anything, but thought I'd share.

Just wanted to throw this out there.... but, it looks like the oil pump part number is the same for the Camaro SS, the CTS-V, and the wet-sump C7 models. I wonder if any of these cars are having issues.

Possibly its an assembly tooling issue and not a component issue. Melling has had a good reputation as being an oil pump manufacturer for at least 40 years.

according to the manual the oil pumps on these cars is supposed to be located with a piece of tooling, and the gerotor clearance measured at .002" to ensure that during operation they do not bind. if the gerotor tips touch it will wear off quickly contaminating the oil with very hard metal particulates.

Ive witnessed this on an oil pump change on a LS engine about 5years ago.

I have noticed that all oil pump failures so far that I have seen have been 2018 model years with 2017 build dates. Mine has had two failures within 1500 miles, that is what doesn't make sense to me.

Made a horrible rattle noise and lost oil pressure, when you restart car it has either low or no oil pressure, but isn't making any rattling noises. Probably the noise was the pump breaking internally which is what happened the first time.

When this happens, isn’t there damage to the engine? No scoring of any bearings or anything?

It shouldn't damage the engine if you are at low rpms and shut it off within a couple of seconds, and by couple I mean like within 30 seconds or so. Oil left on the bearings will still lubricate it for a while but will sheer off after a while.

It's fine! It's under warranty right?

To do an accurate case study of bearing wear on LT1/LT4 motors with failed oil pumps would require a whole crew of "engineers" to take motors apart, measure clearances, etc etc. There's really no guarantee that anyone can truly give when an oil pump ceases to pump oil through a running engine. How long can a human live when their hearts stops beating? Technically quite a while right? I certainly wouldn't want to try it out though.

Yeah "technically" there was no damage to the engine after the first oil pump failure. I drove it hard for 1200 miles and had no issues besides a second oil pump failure. Haha.
