Open Ended Lug Nuts

Is anyone running open ended lug nuts with OEM zl1 1le wheels? I ordered a set or Dorman ones, but the seat of the oem lug looks much larger than the aftermarket ones I ordered. The last thing I want is a lug ripping through the wheel on track because there was not enough of a mating surface.

Anyone have a set that they have tested and you know works for oem wheels? I did search, but found info on closed ended and a lot of info on the studs themselves, but not the lugs.

Thank you!

I've run Gorilla 45048BC on my stock SS 1LE wheels, as well as with a set of base-model 18x8.5s and MRR M716. Zero problems.

*Mine were Gorilla branded, but I'm sure they are the same part.
Which Gorilla nuts? The ones I'm using are not the Dormans you reference.

Dorman (713-685A)

Gorilla (45048BC)

The Dorman website also says they're 17mm hex where the Gorillas are 3/4" (19mm).

The Dorman 713-685 is the product I referenced in my original post that I didn't really trust. I should get my Apex lugs soon, and will post up a pic comparing the seats of the two.

I have the Dorman and 1320 Performance, which look exactly like the Gorilla lugs, both are poor quality. Ordered MSI, should be here today...

You are 100% correct! I'm glad you caught that mistake. I will change my previous post to make it accurate.

Also, with only a 17mm hex on a 14mm thread size, that Dorman would worry me as to whether it has enough material around the threads for adequate strength. Both the Dorman and the 1320 lug nuts are close in appearance but a little different from the Gorillas. Only the Gorillas have the double row of knurling near the end.

The Gorilla and 1320 come in identical packaging, imo they are very likely thee same lugs with slightly different details. The chances different factories are making nearly identical products with the exact same packaging is slim to none. Gorilla buys from different sources afaik, and quality is hit or miss, mostly miss these days.

The issue I had with 1320 was the low-profile socket that comes with them has a poor fit on the lug, it doesn't come off the nut easily after torquing them which was a PITA and while none were ever loose I could feel some of them would lose torque and be WAY too easy to remove. I have a new Stanley/Proto 250 lb-ft torque wrench and other lug nuts don't do this so pretty sure it's not a lack of correct torque on install. These lugs just seem super cheap and I bet tolerances are poor.

Dorman is made out of Chinesium and rusts. The conical seats are no longer nice and smooth, imo they have the potential to destroy wheels and I just don't trust how light they are with that 17mm hex body.

I wouldn't trust 1320, Gorilla or Dorman, all garbage imo.

I got MSI 40.0001BLK yesterday, they feel ok so far, lol. Hope I have better luck with them.

I used ZL1 Addons titanium open lug nuts on my 2016 but they are no longer on the web site.

You might want to order the Weapon X’s open lug nuts. They are titanium.

Katech sells an open ended titanium lug nut with the correct taper for the requested application. I have several sets and they are a quality product. They come in a natural finish or black anodized.

Ti lug nuts require a special anti-seize compound be used to prevent galling and a corresponding reduction in torque for a tiny weight savings. Also made in China. IMO, stick with a simple high-quality lug nut like MSI. BTW, I have heard of some popular companies lying about where they are made and have shills pushing them here on this Forum. Not saying this is the case here but I'd reconsider using Ti lug nuts.

I run these and they work great on ZLE wheels. They use a 19mm 12 point socket too so there’s never an issue.
