brake rotors need replacing

My SS has 18,500 miles. Original pads and rotors.
Pads are still good, but all 4 rotors need replacing from what mechanic told me.
Is this normal? He didn’t recommend turning rotors either. I don’t track the car, it’s a daily driver and my braking habits are conservative. I don’t ride the brakes hard.
Anyhow,
I’m replacing pads with ceramic akebono's, and all around drilled and slotted rotors by R1 Concepts. Premier series. Hope they last longer.

Look at your rotors, are they smooth or do they have deep grooves? Can you see the pads, how much material is left? Finally, how foes the pedal feel, do you feel a pulse? Don't take one guys word, look or get a second opinion.

Well, mechanic is not taking my money. He actually lets me buy the parts and he will just install. Rotors are smooth with very minimal grooves,
The ends of the rotors do create a lip.
Pads are still good. I just decided to change the stock ones with ceramic.
Changing out the rotors to drilled and slotted was more of a preference. I just wanted some feedback as to how long these rotors last.

He's taking your money, but you are upgrading so all is well.

That's awesome. Maybe mechanic did underestimate the rotors wear.

Yeah, I wanted to upgrade anyway.
I usually try to buy my own parts and have mechanic do the labor. Or if I have time I do my own work.

I do the same exact thing. Time is always the problem, so I have others do some of the time and space consuming things. Hate that this what I have to do. I just have very limited time. Garages these days though charge like they are the best. And trust me I have had to pay for some real hack jobs that I should have done if I had the time and space.

I'm expecting to get another 50k out of my rotors.

keep your stock ones. the drilled/slotted ones are for looks only. the stockers will perform much better. my brembos have a little lip on the end of them as well, doesn't mean they are bad. im sure I could get 100k out of them at least. I would just save your money man.

When you replace the pads you SHOULD have either the rotors turned(if enough meat) or replace..why? so your new freakin pads can break in and take a set....otherwise the used rotor would cause accelerated wear of the pads....

these days almost no body turns rotors any longer..it's so cheap to just replace....peace out

What braking issue did you take it to a mechanic for? What sparked the looking at the rotors?

To only way to tell if the rotors need to be replaced is if they are below min thickness.

30mm front
26mm rear

Ask your tech what yours measure as.

As far as your "upgrades", they are actually downgrades. The Brembo pads are great, ceramics are junk. Holes and slots in a rotor only take away surface area and offer a spot for cracks to start.

When you look at the price of Brembo pads...you'll probably want to get some more use out of them before tossing them.

The "upgrades" to your system are... step 1 - additional cooling, ducts and hoses to the front rotors and DOT 4 fluid. Step 2 - Big 6 piston front calipers and ZL1 rotors. Step 3 - a full big brake kit from Wilwood, EPC, Stoptech...

The ceramic pad thing is for show cars that don't want brake dust. But they don't stop for sht. The factory Brembos are actually really good for street performance and mild track use if you add cooling and DOT 4.

I worked for Midas for years and now work for Mercedes Benz in system skills. I got more miles out of the AutoZone pads than I did with the GM pads. I also never seen any accelerated wear in the field on customers cars. You machine because of run out. If that's good then it's not needed.
