NASCAR @ "The Glen" - 8/10/09

It's official..."Smoke" wins at Watkins Glen, NY....race was rained out yesterday, so it was run today...Tony's 5th win at Watkins Glen...Marcos Ambrose finished 2nd...
Jeff Gordon and Sam Hornish Jr in horrific wreck that caused a red flag awhile ago...both are OK...disappointed that "my guy" Jeff had first DNF of 2009 and finished 37th......
Dale Jr lost his brakes and crashed and finished 39th...
Really good race though...

I know, I feel his pain, having a bad back problem myself...I almost cried when I saw that crash...I think he or Sam Hornish could possibly have been killed if not for the Hans device and the COT.........feel better, Jeff...

that's for sure...imagine the pressure that poor kid has...I feel sorry for him at times...he's such an all-around nice guy...I loved his Dad, but his Dad was not such a "clean" racer as Jr is...maybe that's why his Dad won as often as he did...he used the "chrome horn" a lot.........
I think Kyle Petty had quite the pressure too, to live up to the "King's" legacy.........

thanks for posting that video....I get chills every time I watch it.......thank God NASCAR has kept improving on safety for the drivers.....
I remember when Dale Sr was alive and was totally against the HANS, said it was for "sissies"...it probably would have saved his life, but at least he didn't die in vain, because after his death, the HANS became mandatory, and has saved countless lives since then...just recall Michael McDowell's wreck last year.........

Missed the race, but what a crash. Montoya finished 6th, so I'm happy about that, although I'm still pissed that he sped on pit lane last race.

God, I know.. I was watching that race off and on and vaguely heard about his remarks before race day on the HANS. I happened to have finished helping my mom with dinner and sat down just to see Dale plow into the wall..

I honestly thought he was going to be fine.. *Salute*

Then in the months afterward Discovery and other like programs kept showing the science of the HANS and why/how it could have saved Dale. Some may have thought it insulting, but it proved that though he raced hard.. he was an unfortunate NASCAR martyr in the realm of the other greats in the 50s and 60s before all the safety equipment became mandatory.
