Worried and Rims getting scratched..

I really dislike the OEM GY Runflats that came with the RS package.

I keep thinking I want to change them out but worry about someone
scratching my bright-silver 20" RS rims or denting the lug nuts while
unmounting/mounting tires on them.

I've read stories on other boards when I owned an infiniti that even
dealers can be rough on rims so there's always a risk of rim damage
and they will always say tough luck or they didn't do it.

Tirerack has good prices but then you need to find someone willing
to mount them. In the past, I've had many places refuse to put on
tires that they didn't sell me directly for full MSRP.

Do people run into rim scratches and dented lug nuts when changing tires?

Can you use Tirerack and still get someone gentle to change the tires?

Or are you better off just paying MSRP at a local tire shop and ask for their
gentlest tech telling them that you are neurotic about scratches on rims?

I order through Discount Tire and have them mount and balance for me. I'm not too worried about scratches.

The closest Discount Tire is 46 miles away from me.

Tirerack is great and I've used them many times in the
past but the last time I did (in 2013) I had a real hard
time finding shops willing to mount them. The place
I ended up going to scratched my rims. Hence my
apprehension going the Tirerack route again.

Good idea but you can't protect the outer edge of the rim.
Those are massively wide tires!

No issues on the outer edge as the tape raises things up. The back is where you’ll see tool marks. Most tire shops place the wheel face down (tape side) so less chance for scratching the faces if you uses tape...

I used NTB several times and this has worked...

I can't imagine how shops can be so stupid as to lay a tire down on
its face so that it can be scratched up.

I had a nail in my left rear within 2 weeks of buying my new Camaro. I took it to Discount Tire with some trepidation that they would damage the wheel in some way. I watched the tech as he removed the tire, plugged it and remounted the tire. He took great care and didn't leave any marks on the wheel, to my relief. I thanked him and tipped him $20.

I guess you’ll need to find a shops that does it the way you like. I’m sure they will accommodate.

You'll need to find a tire shop that uses a Corghi machine. Which saves the rims from being scratched up if the user is not an idiot. I would pay the little extra to find somewhere reputable that handles nice wheels or low profile tires often. It'll be worth the price versus a shop that might cause more $$$ from repair the damage.

Discount tire has managed to scratch/scuff my rims both times they’ve mounted tires on my car. First time I let them off the hook cause my wheels already needed refinishing. Second time, even after telling the salesperson I just got new rims, they still damaged them. I got it in writing on my receipt they would cover replacement before leaving the shop. Hoping they actually follow through with covering the cost, but I’m probably not using them ever again.
