Sorry to here another one added to the list. Mine is torn down right now getting a Katech pump. 2800 smooth miles but don't want to chance it or deal with the inevitable failure. My build date is 12/17

Had it towed in to the dealer today and after checking everything resetting codes and taking it for a test drive it did it again. This time they could diagnose the oil pump as the problem so a new one is on order to be installed tomorrow. Not even 30,000KM (~19000 miles) yet, first time I can really get on it now that the snow is gone and poof, toast .
to confirm, yours is an SS as well? been mostly concentrated to the ZL1s but a few SS models as well.

Correct, 2018 SS 1LE took, I delivery late July/early August of 2017. I drive it as sparingly as possible in the winter which is one reason the KM are so low. That's why I was a little shocked to hear oil pump until I searched and came across this thread.

I was just wondering if we were going to see more SS cars since it's the same pump. Sucks but hopefully you've still got some powertrain warranty.

interesting. going to be keeping a close eye on this. i got mine in May of 17 as an 18 as well. just a shade over 20,000 kms now because it sits all winter.
4 track days and street driving, time is going to tell.

My 2018 has a build date of 9/17. Has anyone heard of the power train warranty running out then oil pump goes? 26k miles on mine only 7 months left of warranty.

Just got mine back from having a Katech pump installed. Here is a picture of the pump that came out. 2800 miles on it. I decided to change it before risking the failure. Where would I find the revision number so I can speculate the probability of failure?

I have been wondering the same thing and been following this thread diligently. I bought an extended warranty just in case. I have an 18 built in early 18 with almost 14k miles on it.

I have not heard many pumps going out past 14 or 15k miles. not that it hasn't happened, just haven't heard of it. there was one list that stated "not even 30k", but didn't state what mileage they were at.

For those that had the "Low Oil Pressure..." message on the dash, did your oil pressure come back after that?

I was a the track last week and the oil pressure blipped to zero, twice in maybe 3 seconds but came back to 40 or 50 psi after each dip. Each dip to zero was a second or less. Car idled fine with normal pressure and actually drove home (1 hour+ drive) okay. The dealer replaced the sensor.

That was pretty much what mine did before it completely failed a few miles down the road.

Same here thats what I have been seeing. I have a certified warranty after my factory power train warranty runs out not sure on the details on that though. Hopefully we are good if we have made it this far.

If the oil pump gear gets stress fractures and subsequently "explodes" (as all the case studies indicate) it's an inherent materials science problem and could happen to any pump at any time, I don't think anyone is "free and clear". All these pumps have the same gear according to Katech (their pump uses upgraded billet gear).

Imo your best defense is give the oil PLENTY of time to reach operating temp. Bad things tend to happen when you hammer the throttle on cold/high viscosity oil (which is much higher stress on the pump)

It's the outer ring that cracks. Look at post#1071, at the7 o'clock position. The outer ring cracks at that indexing pin cutout, besides also cracking in other places.

The gear itself never fails?
