As I thought, delivery pushed back

I was finally given a May 11 delivery date. Today, march 27, my salesman called and said now June 5.
Can't understand two things.
How can it take longer to ship a car than it takes to build it ?
How can car manufacturers maintain a profit with this kind of delay ?

Today is April 27th, not March 27th.

The shipping logistics arent all on GM. There is a lot going on with the rail system right now, and if you live in a unpopulated area, or far away, or area with not many Camaro deliveries, it may take a while before your Camaro gets on the train with enough other Camaros to justify their shipping cost to your location.

The Camaro is not a big seller for GM, so a delay on them isnt that big of a deal. That being said, plenty of Camaros are going out, and rather quickly. Its just some us also have cars sitting on the lot (and there are a ton of them) and they just arent moving very quickly. Its the end of the line for Camaro so GM isnt exactly putting much time, money, or effort into making sure everything goes perfectly smooth.

Edit* I just looked up the most current satellite imagery of the Lansing plant to see all the Camaros on the lot and OMG, I made myself sad. There are so many lol. Feels like mine may never break free.

Most OEMs are plagued with logistic issues post 2020 disruptions and FIFO is not being followed which doesnt make any sense. Shipping time post production is hit or miss, it can be shipped within a couple of weeks or can sit in the plant for even months.

This is very true.

Last year my 2SS 1LE was built April 26, then sat in a holding area in Lansing until August didn't get to the dealer for delivery until August 24th.

I have a ZL1 on order with a TPW of 8 May just hoping the same scenario doesn't happen with the ZL1.

There is a national rail car shortage. Thats why. Your car is sitting at a railyard waiting on a ride.

Rail cars are dedicated to vehicles, built especially for them, how could those be in short supply? Particularly when there was only about 14m vehicles produced last year vs 2019 when there was 17 mill produced. You can't use a rail car built for vehicles for anything else?

If that is the picture of the plant wouldn't a good number of those vehicles be the employees that work there? I understand 1600+ workers at that plant. Both Camaro's and Cadillacs are produced there. That would be the lot closest to the plant. I worked in the auto industry when I was younger, crazy getting out of those parking lots at quitting time.

I live near Detroit where there are storage areas for vehicles produced in and around the area, doesn't look that unusual to me. What is kind of sad is the lack of product at the car lots. Chrysler seems to be well stocked but Ford and GM lots have a real problem with product.

Many/most auto dealers in Ontario advertise on Autotrader, I queried new Camaro's in Ontario , only 1 came up and I'm not sure the dealer even has it because it is a generic picture. Might just be trying to lure someone in to order one. GM sucks with matching supply to demand.

GM doesn't get paid for the vehicle until it is delivered to the dealer.

What you should do is use google earth and pull up the Lansing plant. Then go 2D and zoom. It is full of Camaro's and Caddy's. I can even tell SS-1LE's from the photos. And if they are employee's rides, they sure park nut to butt! They are products waiting for Shipping. some maybe waiting on a part or two. IMHO.

That picture that shows the Lansing plant you put up from Google Earth was taken May of 2022, that is the most recent one available. Our trees in this are are not out yet (I'm not that far from the plant) some are maybe half way leaved, some trees just starting, that was my first clue. Then I checked the date on Google Earth. Unfortunately it doesn't tell us what is going on today. Last year and in '21 there was all kinds of rail issues, the ports were still backed up. The ports are clear now, not hearing that the rails are backed up any longer.

Rail traffic is actually down this year, so shouldn't be a problem, some are claiming a recession already is impacting rail traffic.

I saw a post from a guy from Florida (jimharrell) that claims he ordered his vehicle March 14 and had it delivered yesterday, a 2SS 1LE. Sat just one night at the rail yard. Here is the link...pretty lucky guy, like someone told him go buy a lottery ticket !

To be fair, if you actually go look on that map, most of the parking on the right side of the plant is employee parking. But pretty much everything on the left is cars that haven't shipped, not to mention a further location south east of there stocked with tons of Camaros. Actually playing around on google earth view (now that its a 2023 updated view) its crazy just how many Camaros are out there.

It makes me sad knowing mine was built over a month ago and is just sitting with a delayed ETA, and with hundreds and hundreds of these Camaros produced before mine, I feel like I am never going to get it. But its still odd that some cars get an allocation in a week, produced shortly after and then immediately shipped out, but others wait months for the allocation, another month to have it built, then it sits at the plant for several more months. Just a crazy and seemingly random process.
