Just a FYI- I ordered the cheaper cap. Decided I wasn't gonna pay $22 more for one that said DEXOS, but that's the one I got

Might happen again... do you feel lucky?

How is 5W40 harmful to cats verses other weights?

It's not. I've been running 5w-40 Valvoline Dexos2 since the first oil change.

The benefit of 0W-X vs. 5W-X is supposed to be less engine wear during startup and the first few minutes while the engine warms up.

Excellent point! Although, the assumption would be that you are slowly losing performance and MPG as they clog over time.

Or.... the other argument is you the owner damaged your own cats by putting in oil that was not recommended for long term use.

Perhaps, but with the 5W-40 being Dexos 2 certified, how is it any different than being able to use a Dexos 2 certified 5W-30, or 0W-40? I get lost there. The only thing that might make sense is that the Valvoline 5W-40 MST wasn't Dexos certified when the new LT1 came out.

Until Mobil 1 0W-40 ESP (Dexos2) is readily available AND doesn't cost $10/qt, I'm sticking with Valvoline 5W-40 MST (Dexos2). Just picked up 10 quarts at NAPA on sale for $5.39/qt.

Hell, I may even go back and pick up another 10 before the sale ends. I don't expect M1 to be that cheap for a long while, if ever.

I got 2 6 qt. cases of the Mobil 1 0W-40 ESP online for 100.00 and with the Mobil 1 rebate (just ended I think) got 24.00 back so 6.30 a quart or so. Not too terrible.

I saw that deal at Speedway Motors. If the rebates ever come back I'll probably pick up 2 cases. Not a bad price.

Speedway seems to have the best deal on this stuff. They even sent me a $25 discount coupon after I ordered the first 12 quarts, so I ordered 12 more and got the rebate and the discount.

They sell Castrol Edge 0w40 at walmart, but have not seen a bottle with the dexos 2 logo. Anyone know if this is a case where they didn't have the cert yet to put on the bottle, but the oil is the same?

OP mentioned this oil in the beginning of the thread, any updates.

Playing on the web, I found a UK Castrol Edge Titanium FST 0w40 that has the dexos 2 on the label, but does not show that spec on the castrol UK website either.

https://www.buycarparts.co.uk/castrol/9029838

https://www.castrol.com/en_gb/united...ab_0w-40-a3-b4

Had a little more time and compared the data sheets for the US oil and the UK oil and everything on the sheet matches.
