A person can do a lot of studying on the "best" motor oil and still remain confused on the subject. Admittedly, I've spent a lot of internet time trying to figure out what oil to use in my new ZL1, and I'm still not certain. I think most oils focusing on balancing cost, environmental concerns, and wear protection. I'm most interested in wear protection. Unfortunately, it's difficult to know what additive packages each oil formulation has and for the most part the manufacturer's aren't telling!
The owner's manual tells us to use a dexos1 oil for daily use. The Supplemental Performance Manual tells us to switch oil to a dexos2 formulation prior to racing. Dexos2 is typically a diesel engine oil. The additive package in dexos2 (I believe) contains more anti-wear additives than dexos1 (ZDDP). However, ZDDP is a poison for our catalytic converters, so it can't be used permanently. I haven't found any single oil that meets both dexos 1 & 2 certification (anyone else)? I plan to continue studying the issue (frustrating as it is), and hopefully glean some insight into what oil to use day in and day out. I'm sure I'll put preference on whatever brand I believe is uperior in terms of wear protection, regardless of whether it meets dexos1 standards; but even that is difficult as the dexos page I posted earlier lists many oils meeting the standards, however most of those oils don't list themselves as dexos1 certified on their packaging. Confusing to say the least! Would appreciate hearing where any of my assumptions are in error.

I'll be running Motul X-Clean 5W-40 year round (already did my first oil change 2500 miles ago). |

From what I can tell, the main difference between dexos1 and dexos2, aside from the oil weight, is that dexos2 requires medium to low levels of SAPS. SAPS are sulfated ash, phosphorus and sulfur which are detrimental to diesel catalytic converters.
However, the standard oil calls for dexos1 which can be full SAPS, which makes me ask how the car is affected by this figure. Most Camaros will see over 100k miles with nothing but dexos1. The only two reasons I can see dexos2 being specified are: 1) The engine needs the extra protection of a 40 weight oil, and dexos2 is the only GM certification available for that. 2) At high load of track events, the emissions equipment is more affected by SAPS. However this doesn't make sense as they also recommend Mobil 1 15W50 which is full SAPS. Some discussion on the subject: https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ub...opics/4224569/ |

Being in the oil production business, racing at higher temps require or recommended the use of higher Viscosity lubricants. I would switch to M1 15w-50 for racing.

Dexos 1 is basically US spec oil and dexos 2 is Europe spec oil which have difference of course because we can't all just get along.

I used Mobil 1 in my Z06 prior to the ZL1 without issue. WalMart sells at a very good price and plan to stay with Mobil 1. Use Royal Purple in the 73 Camaro. Who knows what is best.

FWIW..... Used Redline 5w30 in my Bimmer for a few years. Seemed to be the quietest oil in that DOHC 3.0L N52 High Perf Engine. The bottle says Exceeds Dexos 1 but no green logo. Guess they didn't pay the fees to play. Still have 10 qts; probably will use up on an oil change.
Went with dealer AC Delco syn blend on 1st oil change last fall. Researched oil specs over the winter and made a list to go shop at Walmart. - Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Plus 5w30 - Quaker State Ultimate Durability Full Synthetic 5w30 - Pennzoil Platinum Plus 5w30 - Mobil 1 Advanced Synthetic 5w30 - Valvoline Syntec Full Synthetic 5w30 The last oil change last week (24% OLM), Walmart didnt have Penn Ultra on the shelf, so went with QuakerState UD FS. Read a lot of good opinions about the oil, so for $40 for 2 qt jugs, had to try the stuff out. |

Good News!!
The manual stated to use a Dexos2 5w-40 oil for track use...OR...Valvoline SynPower MST 5w-40...well guess what?! The Valvoline 5w-40 is now Dexos2! (And currently 5.19/qt at NAPA) Didn't realize till I picked up the bottles, today! |

They recommend, as an alternative a Mobil 1 15w-50...but they also state explicitly to change it out asap after a track event... |
