Like others have said, this is a dealer thing and not a GM thing. I had the oil in my SS and Camaro changed at 500 miles and the dealer didn't make a fuss at all.

I am not sure whether GM uses break-in oil or additives, but the break-in period is 1500 miles, so most likely I'll do my first change at that point. I am well aware of the 500 mile change due to metal abrasion that occurs in a new engine, but I suspect this is not as critical as it used to be. I think when engines are being rebuilt its definitely important to check early on for metal contaminants, even after running it initially let alone 500 miles, but these production engines are not the same as custom built race motors. YMMV!

Did mine today at 1,007 miles.

Swapped to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w-30.

Sample of original oil is on it's way to Blackstone. I'll post when I get the results.

FYI - I religiously followed the break-in procedure.

changed at 500 miles, to full synthetic. used dealer's "free" oil change, which amounted to a $36 credit toward the full syn oil change; so i paid around $86 out of pocket. i don't care about "wasting good oil." i do this whether it "needs" it or not at 500 miles. makes me feel better! then i go about 3-4k miles between changes. always full synthetic.

Did mine at 500 and then again at 1500. Did it have to be done that way, I don't know? Did it hurt, no way....

I know this is an old thread. But Matthew what was the results of the engine oil analysis? I tried looking through your old post but couldn't find anything.

I just posted my most recent one over in the Track section.

This is with the Motul X-Clean 5w/40 after 5k miles, 5 track days and about ~50 AutoX runs.
