Thermostat

Hi all, I have the stock thermostat on my 2010 Camaro SS. See below what all I've done, but basically SS3 cam and supporting mods, has 60k miles. I live in AR and VA. It's a daily driver, no track runs. Most of the year ECT runs 195° to 205°F, in summer heat I see it up to 215° some times. All in normal ranges but I'm considering a slightly lower thermostat (180 or 175). What do you recommend? TIA! PFA.

I use the Mishimoto 167 thermostat in mine. I live in AR as well. Check with Ryan or Ben (depending on who tuned your car) on getting the cooling fans updated to come on sooner as well.

It's not broken, don't fix it. If you must do something then have the fans come on a bit sooner as mentioned.

A lower temp thermostat will not lower the steady state temperature. It will open sooner, but once it's open and you keep driving, you'll get to the same 215 degrees on a hot day as before.

There's more to be gained from turning on the fans at a lower temp. They will stay on over a wider range and remove more heat.

Hi! Yeah, Ben tuned it (and then re-tuned it when I was having that strange 2000 rpm idle on cold start problem). I'm dropping it off in April for a few things so I'll have Ben adjust the fan parameters.

I'm running a Mishimoto 169 in mine after seeing some of the testing "acammer" who works with the GPI guys has done on his Camaro, also I have the fans coming on sooner as well in my tune. On a hot summer day in stop and go traffic it never gets over 201. Cruising at speed she will stay right around 187-189..

^^^These are the results I see. I put in a 160ish stat and had the fans come on earlier and it rarely breaks 200 unless tracking and then 207 is about max. It really helps keep the temps down drag racing because you are not running that long so that little bit of additional time with the stat open matters. Some guys even jumper the fan relay to run the fans constant between runs. Others will tell you it makes no difference on ET, but I prefer to keep it cooler.

Mishimoto 169 degree t stat here too, works great and the car never gets hot even pushing it in the canyons.

I run a 160º stat in mine and never break 200º, but I am in Florida, so it serves it's purpose well. I was tired of hitting 215º+ in the summer and having timing pulled. With the 160 stat I am usually between 172 - 192º.

Just make sure to get a retune to have your fan profile changed so they come on sooner.
