Update on my friend... I was wrong... He is on his FOURTH rear end, not third.. Yes; he talked to the factory today and, I'm sure, they are going to buy the car back.. He will immediately buy another one as he loves the car.

You probably don't need to tell him to take a test drive first.

Is this a symptom of the manual rear only?

No, I have the A8 and mine has been doing it on cold mornings. Took it in yesterday and they had to keep it overnight. Waiting to hear back today and what they will do. Hoping it's as simple as not enough rear end fluid from the factory.

I've noticed my 1SS makes an odd sound when turning on these cold mornings. But after I get about 15 minutes down the road its all gone and I'm never sure what to make of it.

Sorry, just noticed that you asked about the manual rear, not the transmission. That I don't know about.

I have heard it a few times too upon start up in the mornings as I'm turning out of my driveway. I think its the limited slip making noise before the oil gets circulated on everything. I'm going to ask the dealer to check it out when I get an oil change. It goes away once warmed up. .

Rear End Rub

I recently purchased a 2016 Camaro 2SS 6 Spd Manual that does the rear end rub when turning at first start up on cold mornings it does go away after a few miles. I took it to the dealership where I purchased it and the service writer told me there was nothing that could be done about it, and he told me it happens in the Corvettes as well. After I left that day it was obvious they did something to it because it didn't make the noise for a about a week after that, however it's been a couple of weeks since that and it's doing it again now. Since I'm reading about these rear end replacements and such, I now know I have to go back and make them address this issue further.

Update
Dealer changed the fluid in the rear diff. The noise came back the next day. Dealer said to drive it for a awhile and see what happens. It only does it on the first two corners of the day, then it goes away. I don't think its anything major, it just doesn't seem right.
