Yes. What do they say about oil that makes contact with the internal engine?

I changed oil at 600 miles and I checked my oil today (about to do an oil change) at 4k miles and it did not use any.

unfortunately the joke was on me; the car is too low to get on my 2 post lift.

If you feel like the OLM is miscalculating or not representing the true degradation state of your oil you have options, you know.

- You can just reset the OLM yourself without changing the oil.
- You could change oil without resetting the OLM.
- You could also change oil when you believe it needs to be changed and reset the system at that time.

My first oil change at about 200 miles I didn't even look at the Oil Life guage - didn't know it existed. I just wanted to be sure any metal filings or assembly debris were cleaned out. When I changed oil the second time at about 600 miles, OLM it said I still had 80% life left. I knew that it needed to be changed so I went ahead and changed oil and filter myself but left the meter alone. The first-catch sample I took proved me right. It was dark with a minor amount of suspended fine metalic particles, which is to be expected on a new motor. That's when I replaced the plain drain plug with a magnetic one designed for the Corvette C7. Other engine oil changes were at 1200, 2500, 3600, and 4500. The 1200 and 4500 changes were my 2 free GM oil changes. They will automatically reset your life meter at the dealer service. I'll do another oil change myself this week when I expect to trip 6000 miles on my ODO. I'll reset the meter myself.

Why change my oil so often? Mostly for peace of mind... Most of my miles so far have been drag racing or travelling to and from tracks. During break-in I changed it more often. Since then it's been about every 1000 miles. This time I let it go a little farther (1500 miles) to see how it looks. If it's darker or smells older I'll go back to fewer miles. I figure it's cheap insurance to minimize engine wear and keep it clean inside.

Oh man. That sucks! The self-help auto shop where I do my work has lifts with 2 different types of tips on their 2-post lifts. The ones that work best are those with screw-type, adjustable tips. I lift at the strong corner points just behind the front wheels and just in front of the rears. The other type of 2-post lifts have fold-up tips. Some of them are too high and others just barely fit if the lift is all the way down. Are you sure your lift is completely setting down on the base?

If you can't borrow a drive-on or adjustable 2-post, I guess you could use a floor jack to put the car up on jack stands.

I used to change my oil every 3000 miles on all my vehicles with Castro GTX 20w50. Now will only using Mobil 1 5w30 in both vehicles and I will change at 5000 miles. Any more frequent is really just a waste. I know Mobil 1 is 10,000 miles supposedly, but I will still change at 5000 miles for peace of mind also.

the arms go under the car, but the ground effects hang down lower, and they do not clear the top of the arms if the pads were brough into contact.
the car has an aluminum brace underneath, and it blocks any places where you would be able to put a jack, and there is nothign under the nose of the car to jack on to lift it up to put extensions on the arm ends to clear the ground effects.

Ive never had this problem before... I guess im SOL.

Update:

Since the oil change at 4437 miles, I have really racked up the miles(LOL) and have gone 560+ miles. I have almost babied this thing, highway miles at 65. Since the original post I went back and rechecked and I was a little off on the miles. It was 1.75 quarts for 2700 miles or a qt for around 1500 miles. So the oil has not moved anything and it should have burned at least a third of a qt. So just to show that high RPM's, means high oil consumption along with high gas consumption.

Last oil change at 21.5k miles, Edge 5w30 D1 in the crank, usage has improved to a quart every 3300 miles. Better result since the last time I posted here (qt every 2.5k mi).
Using Edge 5w30 again, although the formula has changed to meet the D1G2 spec.

Might try a 5w40 next time.....

Just did my 500 mile break-in oil change. Changed to 0w40 and the car hadn't consumed any at the time of the change.

Beating on it regularly and will check again at 1500.

Just completed my 2nd oil change with 14% left on the meter at 4400mi and it still hadn’t consumed any oil from what I could see on the dipstick.

I changed first @ 1,000 and not since. I drag race often and so far no noticeable loss of oil at 4,000+. Going to the 0 weight next if I can find it.

Did 500, 1500,
then every 5000 miles.
10 qt of Mobil1 5w30 + PF64.
Added magnetic plug on the first one.
Consumption ~ zero.
Use race ramp with extension for low clearance.

Ive done the 2 recommended oil changes at 500 and 1500 with 5w 30 per the cap and manual, and am now at 2500 miles and no oil use so far.

I'm resurrecting an oil thread to see if everyone is willing to update us on their oil consumption after putting several thousand miles on their LT4.

2017 ZL1 M6
10K Miles
Moderate spirited driving
Usage 1/2 qt 3K miles
