Losing oil pressure?

After a few consecutive pulls we notice my oil temp shoots up and oil pressure drops to about 10-15. Lifters begin to sound like crazy.

I think I'm burning oil like a mofo and viscosity is nearly nill. I'm going to be putting 5W50 or 15W50 oil in the car to try to help it. We put an additive in the oil and it helped a lot.

Any other ideas? Car still reads 30% oil life but on dip stick the oil is way below where it should be... Car is obviously burning oil.

Do you have a catch can installed? If so how much is it filling up? I would also check to make sure you dont have rings leaking.

No catch can.

No leak.

We have been looking like crazy. I have 10W30 in the car but temperature here is usually 95F+. And it's humid as hell.
My mechanics foxbody had the same problem until he switched to 5W50. The additive I put in has helped it quite some and I'll probably be changing the oil either this week or next. But man, the oil temp spikes noticeably and oil pressure just PLUMMETs if I am sitting still. Rev it a little and oil pressure immediately goes back up. Or just drive it around in D and oil pressure comes up. Only happens when car is still.

Try to keep it simple: 1 change the oil, 2 get yourself a good catch can, 3 check the outcome...if the problem persists then further investigation would be needed, let us know what happens

Wink

I wouldn't think it's a catch can issue. How hot is your oil getting? Check your oil for metal real good incase you have some bearing problems. What we really need to know is how hot the oil is. Hotter the oil the lower the pressure is going to be.

Oil gets to about 230-240 maybe touching 250 at times. Pressure drops to 15. After adding the additive the problem has gone away. This happened after 6 consecutive long pulls on a race day and then started happening after 2 pulls on the days to follow. After 1 dyno pull, all of 3rd, it happened on Saturday.

What brand and kind of oil? After hard runs oil temps temps are going to go up but 230-240 after hard runs wouldnt be the issue IMHO.

We're 98% sure it's the oil. Like I said my buddy has a foxbody 700+rwhp with a pushrod engine similar to mine and he had same problem until he switched to 5W50. Like I said the additive has erased the problem literally.

I have upgraded lifters.

Yeah it does sound like the heat is breaking down the oil. Alot of ls1 turbo guys run Rotella synthetic, schaeffer etc.. Im thinking if you use a good 10w30 mobile 1 you would be good to go. If you Drive you car hard ( which we know you do) your going to need to change the oil more often cause the heat, etc.. is going to brake it down alot faster. Oil gets hot it thins out. Like i said i would just use the 10w30 with a stock short block and a maggie. When was the last time you changed your oil?

I alway use 5-30 mobile 1 in my car. I live in a rather hot summer climate and race my car. Its was also supercharged(swapping to turbo now) and i never had a problem. I also changed my oil like clock work when Im racing alot.

I run Mobil 1 15-50 per Andy at ADM. Pressure and temps are good but then I don't beat on mine as much as you beat on yours
