Questions about Track wheels- Best tires for 20in wheel at track

What tires will be best for a street car that will occasionally hit the track?

If I run with 20in wheels, does that automatically mean I should expect a slower trap speed?

Truthfully, I was thinking about getting the ZL1 replica wheels with DR’s, maybe 19’s square...thoughts, recommendations?

This is what I found:

Nitto 555R
275/40/20 28.8
305/35/20 28.5

MT - ET Street S/S
275/40/20 28.7
285/30/20 26.7
305/35/20 28.7

Toyo R888R
285/30/20 26.8
285/35/20 27.9
305/35/20 28.4

From my research, the 555R hook well, (I have a set, but I'm stock) but cornering leaves something to be desired.

The E/T street S/S I hear hook even better than the 555R's at the track....but wear quicker and not as good on the street as people say they're softer.

The Toyo R888R is what I decided to go with in a 285/35/20 to DD (I have 305/35/18 Nitto 555R for the track).

I've been researching this for 2 weeks. I hear nothing but good things about the R888R. A lot of High HP cars use them and love them. They're a little noisy....but they all said they'd buy them again. Pretty much everyone said best tire they've ever ran. Hook great in the street. Not much info as a DR though. These are a road course tire that is streetable.

Disclaimer: the 305/35 listed above all require at least a 10" wheel. That being said, several Hellcat and SS owners have put this tire on their stock 9.5" wheels with no issues....just saying.

I am running 285/30 and 305/30’s now. I have 10 and 11in rims, but I thought we needed 30, not 35’s.

With any of these tires, would I want to get matching front and rear, or would I really just need new rear tires?

I ran the NT05R's on just the back and it hooked great on the street. They're more aggressive than the 555R's but you can still dd with them as long as you're careful

I was just stating the tires and sizes available. I didn't realize you had 10" & 11" wheels. as far as 30 or 35...or even 40....whatever it takes to get you near a 27.6" diameter...at least that's what the stock diameter is.
Ex: stock front is 245/40 and the rear is 275/35

Your 285/30 is about 1" shorter than stock.

I'm only going running R888R's on the rear...that's where I'll need the traction.

with your 11" rears we can add these to the mix:

Toyo R888R
315/30ZR20 27.2
325/30ZR20 27.7

Nitto NT05R
315/35/20 28.7

Geesh. Things just got much tougher. I was on the phone with the guys over at PK Designs and am waiting for a few quotes so I can figure out the best path.

Because the DR's are all taller, will that be problematic (new rears would be nearly 2in taller than fronts)?

I am now considering two paths:
1. Get 4 new wheels (MMR 650's and get the right size fronts/rears together). This is going to run close to $3k (mounted balanced w/ TPM's).
2. Go with a 17in drag pack rears only. Probably run the Nitto 05r, probably close to $1500 (mounted balanced w/TPM's).

UNLESS I can find a drag radial that will match up nicely with my current front wheels/tires...then I would consider a third option:
3. Get 2 rear MMR017's fitted with DR's.

I really wanted the this option, but I don't see any tires that match up to my 285/30's...

Actually, maybe I missed an option:

Toyo R888R's would work, if I just move my wiring harness, right?
315/30ZR20 27.2

Only downside is that I would be running Nittos in front and Toyo's in back.

Have you guys looked into 19's so many more tire choices its amazing!!! Well i noticed not many people have I will probably be a guinea pig. Just ordered 19's should have them in 6-12 buisness days my plan is 275/40r19 up front and 305/35/19 NTO5R drag radials rear.. However, going to be a month or so as looking into having some custom paint work done on them. Shout out to all the vendors out here that helped me and gave me price quotes. need4speed/Pk Auto . I usually do street legal drag nights about 2-4 times a year.. Stocks rears just can't handle that 500whp

That's almost stock diameter...might not have to.

I decided to hold off, run through my current tires which probably won’t take long at this pace and then I will just add the dr’s on the back. Looks like the R888R’s are the best choice and will just check on moving harness.

Been there with the NT555R 35 aspect 305s and matching height fronts, with a spacer needed. Next time I will go with the 20x30x315 R888R’s in the back after tons of thread reading.

A good compromise street/strip tire with good handling and traction.

That works on the ZL1 with the stock wheels or so I read. Has anyone tried this on an SS?

I wonder if we have anyone who has ran the 1/4 mi with these tires. Would love to compare the HP, Trap and ET compared to cars running the drag pack.
