Launching with Maggie (or any other blower)

With the A8 and a Maggie, is the best launch technique to blast from idle?

(I had a duplicate post, son i am just making this something worth discussing).

I have no idea. While i grew up at a local drag strip watching my father race. I have about the same set up as you and i put Toyo proxes R888R all artound and let the back tires down to 15 psi and well see as this will be the first pass for me. I hear that the A8 tranny dosnet shock the axle like a manual would. Not sure what you have for axles but if it bites out of the hole I wonder if 550 RWHP will break the factory ones.?

Can't comment on cars with a blower but my stock car went 12.41 @ 115.41 dead stock with the only change being dropping rear tires to 22psi.

I Simply staged the car, waited for the light and hammered it. No foot braking, no launch control etc. Just come off the brakes and hit the throttle.

To get a Maggie car to hook i'm thinking you're going to need drag radials. I just purchased 315/40/18 NT05R's and I'm really happy with them on the street. Haven't had a chance to get to the track.

I too am curious about what is going to start breaking when power and traction comes together.

I'd expect all the Maggie owners to be posting-up..where'd they go?

Good question. I think the R888R is the best choice too.

I will be upgrading my power again in the next few weeks. My fuel system upgrade and smaller pulley are sitting in my garage waiting for the install...debating the cam right now too.

As far as the axle, I know Laynlo is running on the stock setup and he’s over 700rwhp.

I won’t run too often...just test n tune periodically.

Yeah, right? I would expect Maggie, ZL1, or Whipple to have a similar experience.

I assumed we would need to manually control the shift from 1st to 2nd and then mash kicking over to D. On the street, that’s a blast.

I don’t expect DR’s on a 20in wheel to be enough to stop spin, so I figure it’s feathering first, but would love to hear from the experts.

I can't speak on the A8 platform since I am running a manual transmission. I will say this every car, Every track, Every Setup is different so start off idle and try things that work best for your combo.

20" drag radials are fine, I was running 305 nittos on 20" originally to run well into the 10s with the blower as the only mod. Later switched to a 275 Mickey DR on the 20s which worked equally well.

Leave suspension in Tour Mode and push the T/C button once to shut off traction control.
Do a burnout in manual mode - 2nd gear.
Push the shifter back to auto mode and stage the car.
Loading the converter slightly (~1500) will launch a bit softer on the tires. If the track is sticking good try leaving at idle which will flash the converter higher and hit the tires harder out of the hole.

Last but not least - have fun! Practice makes you faster.

If you watch steelheadrob/tatical garge, he has a whipple A8 with DR's. looks like he just leaves from an idle and just floors it.

Yes, I was flat footing from idle off the line. The MT 305/45/17 DRs were sticking. I also used the Pray trick by adding weight in the trunk (60lb sandbag) to help with the weight transfer. Didn't trying any other launches since it was working and the runs were limited. Next time out I might try it without the sandbag and launching at 1,500 rpms.

What kind of power were you making to get into 10’s with 20’s? What kind of trap speeds...that’s awesome.

He was making about the same as mine. As you know I've tried other rpm to leave from and for me its been the right off idle. My 60' times are right in there or better with those who have converters and extensive mods. However your asking about drag radials and I run the hoosier slicks.

I currently have an A8 whipple. I chose the Toyo r888r. I haven't been to the track so i can't give advise on the launch. However the above feedback says launch off idle. I wonder if a 17" wheel and slick would make a difference vs. what i have now?
HAPPY RACING!
