V6 1LE oil level
Hi all,
Thanks for this great resource. I hope to have more than questions to contribute over time. Just took delivery of a new V6 1LE. The car has impressed so far and seems like a well sorted, high value thing. I'm used to little sissy cars, so the V6 seems like a rocket to me.. The plan is to use it for track days/practice/fun in the Midwest (mostly Putnam and Autobahn). Looking through the supplied 2018 High Performance Owner's Manual Supplement, it says: "For LS/LT 1LE, add 1.0 qt of oil over the nominal fill level for a track event. After the competitive driving, remove the excess oil so that the level on the dipstick is not above the upper mark that shows the proper operating range." To follow this to the letter would require driving to the track, adding a quart of oil and then pumping (through the dipstick with a pump?) the extra quart out before leaving. Maybe the V6's have had oil pick-up issues on track? Curious if anyone has any thoughts about or experience with this. many thanks, mike |

I noticed that as well, seems like a PIA. I wonder if it is safe to run with the extra quart all the time..

This was common on earlier LS engines. Run it 1 quart over for track event and then lower back down when you are done.
That usually means when you get back home, as most tracks don't want to deal with your old oil and cleaning up after you spill the whole extra quart and then some all over their parking lot. You should be safe to drive home over full, you just don't want to do that on a regular basis as the extra oil can cause foaming (not good) and get places you don't want it to go. They also used to suggest changing the oil after a track event, which would eliminate trying to remove just one quart from the engine. This made sense as the engine and oil went through a lot of abuse during the track event, why not change it. That was before a 10 quart oil change that costs $50 in just oil and filter, it was more like $20.

Fyi i ran my c5z with 1 quart extra for the track and just left it for dd. For many yrs. The car is now 15 yrs old still with the original motor and a second track rat owner.
And the motor still sings and is as tight as before. |
