Used 18 2SS vs 20/21 1SS

I've been looking at leftover 2020 1SS Camaros and seeing prices in drop as low as 36K. I've also seen a few low mileage 2018 2SS's that are pretty tempting at more or less the same price. It seems like the only big difference is A8 vs A10. It seems like the A10 gets good reviews, but I'm wondering if it is that much of a difference. Has anyone driven/owned both?

Personally I wouldn’t even consider the A8 over the A10 if I can swing the new car price. If it’s in your budget go new. There’s been a lot of guys and gals in our Camaro club that have been dealing with the A8 shudder.

The A8 gets a bad rap because of the shudder but that's not the fault of the tranny. Had the correct fluid been put in from the get go it wouldn't have the negative reputation at all. I prefer it over the a10. The a10 hunts more and is more difficult to intuit what gear you are in when things are moving quick. There are a lot of amenities with the 2ss....drive both and don't let internet opinions sway your decision making too much.

Completely disagree. The A8 is stronger than the SS A10. Plus, if you’re planning on modding the car, the A8 is fully tunable whereas the ‘20-‘21 A10 cannot be tuned. The “shudder” never happened if you addressed it early and still easy enough to fix even if you didn’t catch it early (fluid change and worst case, a converter).

I only ever hear good things about the A10. A little searching shows many issues with the A8. Having to remedy these issues and dealing with potential issues would steer me away from it. If you don't plan to mod the car I would choose a '19+ for not only the A10, but the burble/crackle exhaust tune that the 19+s have.

However, if you do plan to mod I don't think it matters much which you get. Do keep in mind the transmission for the 20+ is not tunable.

I have the 8L90 variant of the A8, and it's perfect, I got the necessary measures taken. Part throttle shifts are smooth, zero gear hunting, no clunks, and performance shift mode is sheer brutality, as it should be. There's really only one general issue with it, the shudder and weird shifts associated with the original fluid, and that is known to be fixable. Say, you buy a CPO car from a decent dealer, you will certainly get that taken care of for free. GM have definitely "earned" themselves a black eye and took a serious reputation hit by being less then outspoken and eager to help owners affected by the issue.

In the way of actual comparison, the A8 is very strong, it will hold more power than the low torque version of the A10 (10L80) in the 2019+ SS application, and is easily tunable for maximum performance; on the other hand, the A10 shifts faster out of the box, its paddle response time is much better, plus it has an extra non-overdrive gear that is actually useful.

With all that said, and somewhat depending on what OP wants to do with the car, I wouldn't make the transmission choice a priority, there are many other factors that go into the purchase. I for one would not want to give up the 2SS features, while others prefer the "stripped down" 1SS or even the newer LT1 that is more of a "blank slate". Also, the 2019+ SS has the upgraded infotainment platform and higher resolution screens/backup camera, plus the same line lock and configurable launch control as the ZL1, if that matters to OP.

I would pick the older 2SS over the newer 1SS, (which I did ). The newer models have so minimal differences that it isn't worth sacrificing the extras of the 2SS. I can't speak to the automatics as I only shopped for manual. That and I personally prefer the '18 front end over the newer ones..

I only have just over a 100 miles on my LT1 and have yet to really get on it. Did give it a shot from a slow roll and the power was there and it wanted to break loose very easy.

One day i will be past 500 miles and let it rip. I can tell ya the stock tires are not gonna cut it.

Depends. Do you want the features of the 2SS or do you want the new car with a full warranty and the A10 vs A8?

I am definitely not against buying a used sports car due to depreciation but it seems like used prices lately are way up. I ended up buying a 2020 Camaro because it was only a few thousand more than a used one for the trim, color, I wanted. Also peace of mind that the car was never modified or abused and properly broken in.

But these are things only you can really answer.

I would skip over an A8 car and look at 2019+ for the A10 if you want an Automatic. Just realize with the new 2020 1SS’s you are seeing make sure of the price. Some dealers post prices with every last incentive added and then reality you will only get the $1,750 base Chevy incentive. So I’d make sure that’s the price you will be buying the car at on those 2020 1SS. There’s plenty of threads here about 1SS vs 2SS. You have to decide how important Leather, heated seats, interior ambient lighting and things like that on the 2SS are to you.

According to GM, 2019 c7's were still affected. Do you know that it actually got a fluid exchange?

"A new transmission fluid exchange procedure and a new formula of Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP transmission fluid have been released to address torque converter clutch (TCC) shudder conditions on 8L45 and 8L90 8-speed automatic transmissions (RPOs M5N, M5T, M5U, M5X) in some 2015-2017 Escalade, Yukon; 2015-2018 Silverado, Sierra; 2015-2019 Corvette; 2016-2018 CT6; 2016-2019 ATS, CTS, Camaro; and 2017-2019 Colorado and Canyon models."

Dealer said it did. They tried to work on it 3 times as well as the rear end warble. Car felt like a slug on power and had a huge amount of lag. My new 2021 LT1 feels like it has a pedal controller on it as it feels 10 times more snappy. Odd that the same engine and the Camaro feels so much faster and no big time lag.

Not sure if they changed the factory tune or the A10 is the reason it feels so much better. My C7 was never right so bye bye it went.
