Alberta Fuel

New SS owner and now that it’s actually nice enough to drive the car just wondering what other Albertans are running for fuel?

Normally I would be against running ethanol blended fuel but since the only 93 or 94 octane we can get here has it, no ill effect for anyone running the higher octane from Petro or Husky?

Safe to just roll with Shell 91 at this elevation otherwise?

Thanks

Dunno about SS, but my C7 never had an issue with 91 octane in the short while I owned it, and I definitely had a few WOT runs in before mother natured yanked it away. I imagine SS wouldn't be any different.

Personally I don't think 91 octane will be an issue since it's still an NA car, and I also stopped caring about the whole E0 and E10 thing. Other than the theoretical 3% decrease in gas mileage(which is too little of variance to be statistically significant) there is little to no harm in using it, especially if you drive your car often enough to refuel frequently.

Now, whether or not the E10 fuel makes sense on a macro scale, well that's a whole other discussion.

Shell, coop, Costco only. I personally try to avoid those places that add ethenol to the gas

Care to explain why?

I used to do the same but realized there is little to no point. Cars are not lawn mowers, they are designed to take E10 and below.

If anything I think ethanol can help reduce carbon buildup by a small amount. Those E85 engines are usually squeaky clean when torn down.

Everything I've googled and after reading older threads on this forum it would seem rolling with 94 is the best bet on account these cars are mapped for running fuel with ethanol in it.

I'm still in the break-in period so I haven't done any overly spirited driving to get a feel of any real difference between when I picked the car up and the dealer filled it with Petro 94 against when I last filled it with Shell 91.

Was more interested in seeing if any folks here in AB have had any issues or more so if 91 is fine with our elevation.

91 will not give you full performance, from what I gather the engine it will retard the timing on 91 Octane. Does it matter for regular driving? Probably not. For track days or full performance Petro 94 is probably a safer bet though.

I used to avoid ethanol too. I must admit I don't know why.

Now I only use Petro Canada 94. Shell 91 when not available.

I asked the question some time ago on the american side of the forum and the answer was between 100% pure 91 octane and adequate mix of gazoline and ethanol at 94, it's better to get the 94.

I recommend 94 at petro. I’ve run 91 a few times on long trips and it feels like my car loses power it’s noticeable at least to me.

Always choose the highest octane.
As stated - the LT1 does just fine with ethanol.

FYI apparently Calgary has Chevron gas stations now that offer ethanol free 94 octane.

Will check it out for my next fill up.

BC has had that for a while so maybe they are expanding. In fact, in BC, only Chevron has 94 octane gas.

Either way, I tried Petro Super 94 and so far I don't notice much, but then again, I am still breaking in and I didn't push my car that hard.
