The LT4 was just a factory hopped up version.
Different heads, intake, roller rockers, and higher compression.

And as iPODFAN11 notes below, they were just RPO option code names, same as GM has always done.

Yep, GM has always reused option code name after enough years have passed.

The new ZR1 Corvette has the new LT5 engine in it.

The C4 Corvette ZR1 also used an engine with the LT5 RPO Code.
But it was a completely different double overhead cam engine.

Just RPO code names.
Just as the Z/28 and ZR1 names are also RPO option code names.

Actually the LT4 was a little more special. The C4 Vette LT1 was rated at 300hp, the LT4 was rated at 330hp. Most of the LT4 Corvettes were the anniversary model for that year.

Also, very few 4th gen Camaro's got the LT4 with somewhere around 100 nuits made thru SLP.

So I would say the LT4 cars are pertty special for their time frame.

It probably wouldn't sound as cool as an LT14 haha. It would be like Apple and Samsung, they are getting too high in the numbers.. Nobody wants an iPhone 14. Or a Galaxy Note 15

The SS model had an RPO of Z27 back in the day. Glad marketing didn’t use that one.

The Collector Edition could had with either the LT1 or LT4 engine.

As I stated above, all 1996 Corvettes with a manual transmission got the LT4 engine.
All automatic transmissions got the LT1.

Although the LT4 accounted for fewer of them than the LT1, they were not that rare.
And the only difference between a regular LT4 Corvette and a "Collector Edition" was the Silver paint.

I have a 1996 LT4 Corvette.

The Grand Sport is a little more rare, as they only built 1,000 of them.
And they got their own special VIN, which has over the years helped greatly in keeping some of their value.

They ALL had the LT4, and they only built 1,000 of them.

And yes, the 1997 Camaro's with the LT4 are quite a bit more rare.
They only built 108 of them (100 for the US and 8 for Canada)

I have a 1996 LT4 Corvette.

Actually, the Collector's Edition only accounted for less than 20% of total Corvettes built that year, Then, you take away how many LT4 CE's were built compared to LT1 CE's and I'd say that's fairly rare, relatively speaking.

Since GM made less convertibles that year than coupes, the LT4 convertible would be the rarest model both in CE and non CE except for the Grand Sport model.

RPO Code Z15 (Collector Edition) = 5,412

So, 25.13% of total production

Thanks. I knew it was either 1 in 4 or 1 in 5. I had one for a few months many years ago. Triple black coupe. Nice cars!

Agreed I was just stating when he said special edition he might be referring to the Collectors Edition

By the way nice looking C4

I owned a 1996 C4 Corvette as well. I use to show it. Few pictures below

Wet sump has a really big oil pan...

The crank snout on the dry sump version is longer.

The new LT1s seemed to be nice performance engines stock, but how many miles can we expect to get out of them?

Chevy is incapable of naming anything other than some variant of "LT" or "LS"
