Is there a scene or resource for hacking the software of the infotainment system? Specifically I would like to change the functionality of the USB song shuffle. It is absolutely terrible and constantly gets stuck in a loop of ~20 songs even though I have over 700 on the USB. I haven't had this issue in any of my other chevy vehicles.

Any possible resources would be helpful. I didn't find anything on a quick Google search.

Not sure if this specific functionality has been done already, but call them and talk to Chris about it, they do offer custom HMI programming. By the way, he is on the forums, he might even see this thread and respond (that said, I'd call anyway).

I seem to recall this problem on another car .. and solution had to do with file naming structure on the drive (all files in root folder).


Worth a try.


With Android Auto.. no longer a problem. Use VLC via Android Auto. Although it handles spaces in file names weirdly.

Yeah, I do not have this problem and I have about 1400 songs.

But, I do rent vehicles and take my thumb drive and sometimes those vehicles are horrible and the "random" after stopping/starting is always the exact same order unless I somehow force it to a different song. It was this way with a Nissan rogue in Washington/Canada a few weeks ago, annoying as hell.

I have a USB drive with about 5000 titles on it and don't have the issue.

I hear repeats before I've heard every song, but that's the nature of chance. Nothing like what the OP is describing, though. On a two-hour road trip, I might hear a couple of repeats.

There's 365 days in a year, but you only need a random pool of 23 people to have a better than 50% chance that at least two people will have the same birthday (not birth year).

Directory structure, file naming convention, file types (including VBR vs CBR mp3's)... these could all be in play.

The proper random shuffle implementation is to take the original playlist, select a song at random, swap it with the last unselected song, and repeat this until the list is fully processed (aka the Durstenfeld enhanced Fisher-Yates shuffle algorithm). This will not have loops or repeat any track.

GM can't write software that can correctly load my USB drive -AND- my USB-connected phone for AA/BT at the same time. What are they chances they could implement that sort of shuffle routine?

Well, when junior HIGH SCHOOL level programmers that GM uses get to that point in their education, maybe they can implement something like it.
