It's not a coincidence. If you look at the value you gave to each number you will see they equal the amount of enclosed areas in each number. It was set up this way on purpose. This is just an example to show how adult brains are wired differently then children's. However the mere title of the thread should have been a hint that the problem and the answer must be very simple and it is. This problem is actually given to 4th-6th graders as a logic question and indeed most children can solve this problem in a few minutes without any pencil or paper.

Another example would be;

Count from one to 20. Now what number comes after nine?

Almost all adults will tell you ten where as most children will tell you the right answer which is one.

My point exactly... I wish I was as clever as the person (or thing) that developed this puzzle.

Hell, I was adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing...WTF? Circles? Enclosed areas? I feel let down now. Yeah, my guess is 2!
