In my mind, that's a good indication of just how bad and unreliable these pumps truly are. They're not making it very far from the assembly line before they go. If I were GM, I would be very worried that someone will lose power or need to shut down the car at the wrong moment and it will cost them their life. Obviously this is not a rare occurrence.

So I am one of those that have modified my car. I am an October 17 build date and know a fellow zl1 owner who's oil pump failed. My previous cars were Porsches and had an oil starvation issue on track days. The simple solution was to install an accusump system. Now with the Porsche it was only a momentary drop in oil pressure, not a pump failure. But, the accusump would add 1-2-3 quarts when it detected a low pressure event. I am considering installing one as insurance on my zle. It would introduce oil under pressure in there event of a pump failure. My thought is that it wouldn't save you from having to r&r the oil pump, but it might very well save the motor.

March 18 build date here--only 3700 miles, so far so good. Fingers are crossed I have escaped the date range from which the most failures were occurring.

I ran into a fellow ZL1 owner tonight a Lowe's. He was actually letting his 16 year old daughter drive the car (cool dad!) This was the first fellow owner I have talked to since getting mine a little over a week ago.

I just asked him how he like his car. He loves it, but he said his oil pump had failed (under 8K miles) and had already been replaced. So, with that being said, my guess is there are way more failures then we assume by just looking at a poll on the forum.

Luckily for me, mine is a toy and not my primary transportation. Knowing about this issue now, there is no way I'd take my car on any kind of trip out of town and risk being stranded and ruining my trip. That really limits the usage I have of this car now to basically cruising around town, going to local car shows, and wiping it down in the garage.

Perhaps the oil pump failure is the reason I see so many used, extremely low mile ZL1's for sale?

Keep in mind that this seems to only affect ZL1's built between 4/2017 and 11/2017. GM has revised the part number for the oil pump something like 6 times, and I don't believe it was an issue after the mid-November 2017 build dates.

Are you sure they revised it? I don't think they did. I can go find my invoice for the part number but I think I checked when it happened and it's the same part number.

I don't want to go through the whole thread again, but I saw at least 4 different part numbers in screen shots/photos/info that people have posted.

edit - Screw it...

12686434 - Found on Les7311's post here. This seems to be what is a current part as of just two months ago.

Have these dates been confirmed at all? The car I'm looking at purchasing right now has a build date of 12/17. After the problems I had with my C7, I really don't want to go through it again with it any car.

2018 ZL1 A10 9k miles
Oil pump shattered, took out the entire motor
GM covered under warranty, no questions
Provided extended warranty that goes with car, traded it in.

Build date on the car was 7/17

The latest build date I've seen on the forums with an issue was 11/17. No confirmation anywhere that I've been able to find, but most of them seem to be from July and October.

I'm with you brother. I'm at around 14K, with below mods. Wondering is oil weight has anything to do with it. I use 0/40

If you like the car, why not get the oil pump changed before it blows? I think one of the posted invoices was for about $2,500. Less than some exhausts.

Any reports on the early 17's letting go?? I took delivery in early-mid March right when it states they went south & don't recall the actual build date.

Uh, because I'm not spending $2,500 to correct GM's design flaws and lack of quality control?
