When I looked at this, the first name I saw, I was like holy $hit its Darth Emma, never hear from her anymore, but it was something too seeing that she was going with an L99 and didn't even have one yet, then she ended up at the top of the fast list with a Twin Turboed, TH400 monster doing like 5.5 in the 1/8 mile...then I saw the thread was from a decade ago

I've read some old vids on here before. Funny how the topics really don't change. 10 years ago....god damn time flies.

I’ll give a shout out to the paddles too. I use them (along with the auto) EVERY time I’m in my car. I’m a ‘paddle-jammin’ SOB. I guess that still doesn’t have quite the ring as a ‘gear jammin’ SOB, huh?

Get a manual. I had an ex who never drove one and bought a manual and learned within a day

Our country is pretty tiny, so city traffic is usually crawling at certain hours with plenty of stop lights, and driving what's considered to be a large car here, an automatic makes much more sense.
If you're travelling mostly on wide open roads, go with the manual.

Both mechanical and now electronic failures with all the dct and computer involvement.
Manuals may also weigh less.
The fewer automatics and turbos in my garage the better.
Manuals keep it simple (plus fun)!

What a crock. In 10 years I've never seen a auto trans failure here on
camaro5. I'm sure there's been a couple but I've seen dozens of std
trans and clutch component failures. dozens. Also, did you ever see
even one member say "I bought the standard because I couldn't
afford the $1,000.00+ for the auto". Same goes for the sunroof
option at nearly $1,000.00. Some just don't have the money to
drive in style but they will not admit it.

My personal cars were manuals from 1970 to about 1995. I went out of my way to own manual cars.

But today's automatics are so much more advanced, with 6,8, or 10 speeds, torque converter lock-up, performance driving settings, and of course paddle shifters.

My 2010 Camaro is an automatic. I can't think of a singe reason to own a manual car in 2019. Once you have accidentally shifted to 2nd instead of 4th at 60mph and over-revved, or paid to have a clutch rebuilt, you will know two reasons NOT to own a manual.

If you care to investigate further, iconic supercars like Ferrari and Lamborghini have left manual transmissions behind. Porsche is still offering manual, but their autos equal or exceed manual lap times.

And at the drag strip, automatics have been beating manuals since the stone age.

As to your question about downshifting to brake: it's not bad for the engine as long as you are not going too fast for the lower gear. There's no protection against mechanical over-revving a manual.

In summary, it's not hard to learn driving a manual at grandma speeds, but performance driving a manual is a whole 'nother country.

This is a personal choice. Get the one that makes you happy. You will be the one driving it, not us.

and 10yrs later, whenever somebody argues auto over manual, lap & trap times being fractions of a second faster still gets brought up... supporting that small percentage of owners who primarily track the vehicle & actually need minuscule amounts of time to outweigh the driving experience & tougher skill/coordination (not saying proper auto launches don't take skill at all - just less).

Buy an auto if you want faster. Manual if you want to satisfy internet race car drivers
